ベスト8敗退のイングランド、指揮官はPK失敗のケインを擁護「彼は最高の選手」

イングランド代表のガレス・サウスゲイト監督が、敗戦の弁を述べた。イギリス『スカイ・スポーツ』が伝えている。

10日に行われたカタール・ワールドカップ(W杯)準々決勝でフランス代表と対戦したイングランド。17分に相手MFオーレリアン・チュアメニの強烈なミドルシュートを浴びて失点するも、そこから徐々に勢いを取り戻し、試合を折り返して54分にはFWハリー・ケインがPKを決めて追いついた。

その後は一進一退の攻防が続いたが、78分に相手FWオリビエ・ジルーに勝ち越しゴールを許すと、その直後に再び獲得したPKを今度はケインが失敗。同点に追いつくことはできず、1-2で敗戦を喫した。
ベスト8敗退という結果で今大会を終えたイングランド。しかし、サウスゲイト監督は試合後、前回王者に果敢に挑んだ選手たちを称えた。

「選手たちは強大なチームと対戦し、ボールを奪い、勇敢に守備をしようとする度胸を見せた。もちろん、完璧ではなく、両チームともに試合の行方を左右するようなミスがあったが、イングランドのフットボールには活力があり、現在だけでなく将来に向けても非常に優れた選手がいることを、再び世界に示すことができたと思う」

「フランスにおめでとうと言いたい。彼らも自分たちが凄まじい試合をしたとわかっているはずだ。これ以上のパフォーマンスはできなかったと思う」

また、トッテナムの同僚でもある相手GKウーゴ・ロリスを相手に、1度目のPKを完璧なコースに蹴り込むも、終盤に訪れた2度目のチャンスを逸したケインを擁護。労いの言葉を送った。

「2本目のPKはとても難しいし、自分のことをよく知っているGKが相手ならなおさらだ。あの状況には様々なことが絡んでいた。彼は最高の選手だが、それでもミスをすることはある。それがフットボールだ」
