東京五輪1次リーグ突破のかかった7月28日のU-24フランス戦(横浜)。三好康児(アントワープ)、相馬勇紀(名古屋)と、試合ごとに左サイドアタッカー要員を入れ替えてきた森保一監督が大一番に抜擢したのが、旗手怜央(川崎F)だった。 右太ももの張りで別メニュー調整が続いていた三笘薫(川崎F)ではなく、旗手を選んだことは、傍目から見てもサプライズに映ったが、背番号13をつける男は序盤からグイグイと飛ばした。開始早々の8分にペナルティエリア手前から強烈シュートをお見舞いし、対面に位置するランダル・コロ・ムアニ(ナント)に激しく寄せていく。 そして前半27分の久保建英(レアル・マドリード)の先制弾のシーンでは、上田綺世(鹿島)の強烈シュートを相手GKポール・ベルナルドーニ(アンジェ)が弾いた瞬間、いち早くこぼれ球に反応した。DFを引きつける鋭い動きで久保がフリーになったのは確か。黒子の仕事で彼は1点目をお膳立てしたのだ。 旗手の活躍はこれだけではなかった。前半34分の酒井宏樹(浦和)の追加点の場面では、久保との連携で起点となり、後半25分の三好の3点目をアシスト。前田大然(横浜)が入ってきた後半34分以降は左サイドバック(SB)に下がってプレーした。 今回のフランスがU-24世代のベストチームではないにせよ、これだけ屈強で大柄な面々と対峙しても全く動じず、互角以上の強度と運動量を発揮し、4-0勝利の原動力になれるとは、本人も想像していなかったかもしれない。日頃、辛口のサッカー解説者・セルジオ越後氏もサッカー専門誌上で「フランス戦のMVP」に挙げるほど、旗手は大きなインパクトを残した。 疲労蓄積が進み、出場停止やケガ人が出る可能性も高い決勝トーナメント以降は彼のような“伏兵"がさらに効果的な働きをしなければいけない。その布石を打てたことで、本人も大いに自信を深めたに違いない。 振り返れば1年半前の2020年1月。旗手はAFC・U-23選手権(タイ)惨敗の屈辱感を胸に秘め、川崎フロンターレの大卒新人として新たな一歩を踏み出していた。その時点で半年後の東京五輪は遠く、彼自身も「五輪は夢のまた夢」と発言していた。 しかしながら、新型コロナウイルスの影響で1年延期が決定。その間、彼は川崎で力を蓄えた。同期の三笘が華々しい活躍を見せる傍らで、旗手自身は試合に出られないことも多かったが、シーズン終盤に左SBで起用されてから状況が一変。「攻撃から守備まで柔軟にこなすマルチタスク」として評価を一気に上げ、森保監督と横内昭展コーチに認められる形になった。 僕は試合に出られるなら何でもいい。SBにしても、前のポジションにしても、見えるものも毎試合変わりますし、それに対して臨機応変に対応していかないといけない。今はその対応がうまくいっているんじゃないかと思います」と本人も語っていたが、前目のポジションで五輪に出ることはあまり考えていなかったはず。あくまでSBとして世界と対峙することを主眼に置いていたはずだ。けれども、ふたを開けてみれば、アタッカーとしての存在感を大いに発揮する形になっているのだから、サッカーはどう転ぶか分からない。ポリバレント性が評価されていなかったら、18人のメンバー入りもなかったわけだから、本当に幸運の男だ。こういうラッキーボーイが出現してこそ、日本は高いステージまで勝ち上がり、53年ぶりのメダルに手が届くのだ。 決勝トーナメント以降の旗手の起用法は森保監督の胸先三寸だろう。ただ、遠藤航(シュツットガルト)と田中碧(デュッセルドルフ)、中山雄太(ズヴォレ)が1枚ずつ警告をもらっていることを考えると、この先は左SBでの出場が増えそうだ。遠藤か田中に何かあれば、中山は板倉滉(フローニンゲン)とともにボランチをこなさなければいけなくなる。そういった状況が31日の準々決勝・ニュージーランド戦(カシマ)で起きないとも限らない。だからこそ、万能プレーヤーには最高の準備をしてもらう必要がある。 「対戦相手がどこであろうと僕自身は試合ができることが毎回楽しみ。国際舞台を経験できる機会というのはなかなかないこと。今回、五輪という素晴らしい場なので、そこでしっかりやりたいと思ってます。 どこで出ても重要になるのは、連携やプレー1つ1つの精度。自分のやりたいことと周りにいる選手のやりたいことを意思疎通し、個人的なミスやパスミスを減らしていくこと。そういった基本的なことをしっかりやれれば、得点失点にしっかりつながるんじゃないかと思ってます」 大会直前に地に足の着いたコメントをしていた旗手。そんな言い回しを聞いていても、人間的に一皮剥けた印象もある。今、ここで頂点まで突き進み、彼自身もステップアップのチャンスをつかめれば、静岡学園高校時代の恩師・川口修監督から託された「UEFAチャンピオンズリーグに出るような選手になれ」という高みにも手が届くかもしれない。 いい流れが来ている今のタイミングを逃す手はない。 2021.07.31 14:45 Sat

女子選手の意見を参考に配慮し白パンツを中止、ナイキが女子W杯出場13カ国の新ユニフォームを発表!
