カタール・ワールドカップ(W杯)でのラストマッチを勝利で終えたクロアチア代表が歓喜に沸いた。

17日の3位決定戦で、グループFでも同居したモロッコ代表と対戦したクロアチア。デザインされたセットプレーからヨシュコ・グヴァルディオルのヘディングで7分に先制し、直後に追い付かれはしたものの、42分にミスラフ・オルシッチが見事なコントロールショットを沈め、2-1で勝利を収めた。

グループステージはモロッコ、ベルギー代表、カナダ代表と同居し、2位で通過。ラウンド16で日本代表、準々決勝でブラジル代表を下してベスト4進出を決め、準決勝ではアルゼンチン代表に敗れたものの、価値ある3位という結果に。1998年フランス大会の3位、前回のロシア大会準優勝に続き、出場した6大会のうち、3度目の入賞(残り3大会はグループステージ敗退)を果たした。

選手・スタッフが宿泊するホテルも、短期間で7戦という激闘を終えた選手たちを祝福。チームカラーである赤と白の風船や紙吹雪でもてなした。

「ショック」「史上最悪」クロアチア代表のW杯ユニ、伝統の市松模様が不均衡なホームは酷評の嵐…アウェイには好意的意見
