▽韓国で行われているFIFA U-20ワールドカップにおいて、人種差別的なジェスチャーをしたとされたレアル・マドリーのU-20ウルグアイ代表MFフェデリコ・バルベルデだが、これを否定した。イギリス『BBC』が報じた。
▽ウルグアイは、準々決勝でU-20ポルトガル代表と対戦。120分間を終えて2-2のドローとなり、PK戦までもつれた試合を5-4で制したウルグアイが、ベスト4に勝ち進んだ。
▽この試合でPKによる同点ゴールを決めたバルベルデが、目尻を釣り上げるゴールパフォーマンスを行っていた。このことが問題視され、アジア人に対する差別だと騒がれていたが、本人が否定した。

カタール・ワールドカップ(W杯)後の最初の試合で6万人を超える観衆を集めた日本代表。そのスタンドには多くの著名人も訪れていた。
25日、日本代表はキリンチャレンジカップ2023でウルグアイ代表と対戦した。
侍ジャパンのワールド・ベースボール・クラシック(WBC)の優勝に世間が湧く中、大きな盛り上がりを見せた日本代表の試合。国立競技場のスタンドには、乃木坂46の元メンバーであるタレントの新内眞衣さんと、和田まあやさんが訪れていたようだ。
新内さん、和田さん共に自身のインスタグラムを更新。新内さんは写真と共に、初めてのサッカー観戦の感想を綴った。

ウルグアイサッカー連盟(AUF)が、ウルグアイ代表の新ユニフォームを発表している。
2024年初頭にプーマとのユニフォームサプライヤー契約が終了したウルグアイ。新たなユニフォームサプライヤーとの契約はまだ結ばれておらず、今回の新ユニフォームもサプライヤーなしでの製作となった。
その新ユニフォームには、男女平等のための戦いに貢献するという目的もあり、3月8日の国際女性デーの枠組みから、ユニフォームの一部に女性に対する暴力根絶のシンボルであるパープルリボンにちなんだ紫色が取り入れられ、「8M」のロゴもあしらわれている。
AUFがこの「8M」のロゴを用いたユニフォームを製作したのは史上初のことであり、23日にバスク代表と、26日にコートジボワール代表と対戦する男子チームの選手たちの試合でお披露目となるということだ。
6月に開幕するコパ・アメリカ2024にも出場するウルグアイだが、このユニフォームを同大会で着用するかどうかは不明だ。

バルセロナに所属するウルグアイ代表FWルイス・スアレスが、現役引退を発表した元ウルグアイ代表FWディエゴ・フォルラン(40)にメッセージを送った。
フォルランは、アルゼンチンのインデペンディエンテでプロキャリアをスタートし、マンチェスター・ユナイテッド、ビジャレアル、アトレティコ・マドリー、インテル、セレッソ大阪などでプレー。ビジャレアル時代の2004-05シーズンには25ゴール、アトレティコ時代の2008-09シーズンには32ゴールを挙げ、リーガエスパニョーラで得点を獲得するなど、両足から放たれる強烈かつ正確なシュートと得点感覚を武器に活躍した。
また、ウルグアイ代表としては112試合に出場し、36ゴールを記録。3度、ワールドカップ(W杯)の舞台に立ち、2010年の南アフリカW杯では、7試合5ゴールの成績でウルグアイを40年ぶりのベスト4に導き、自身も大会MVPを獲得した。
輝かしいキャリアを築いたフォルランは、C大阪退団後、母国のペニャロール、インドのムンバイ・シティを経て、2018年1月に香港の傑志(キッチー)に加入。同年6月に退団し、フリーが続いた後、この度、ウルグアイのテレビ局『テレムンド』で現役引退を発表した。
ウルグアイの英雄が引退してことを受け、同国代表で約7年間、共演したスアレスは自身のツイッター(@LuisSuarez9)で想いを綴った。
「ウルグアイサッカーの歴史だ。代表チームとプレーした全てのクラブで、ウルグアイ人に忘れられない瞬間を与えてくれたことを感謝する。そして、いつも僕に教えてくれたことにも感謝している」
「ピッチ内外の僕のアイドルで、一緒にプレーできたことは夢のようだ。ウルグアイの伝説さ。あなたの新しい挑戦で多くの成功があることを祈っている」
なお、フォルランは指導者ライセンスの取得に動いており、今後は指導者としての活躍が期待される。

ガーナ代表FWアサモア・ギャンが2010年の南アフリカ・ワールドカップ(W杯)でのPK失敗について語った。イギリス『デイリー・メール』が伝えている。
ギャンもプレーしたガーナ代表は、南アフリカW杯で躍進。セルビア代表、オーストラリア代表、ドイツ代表と同居したグループステージを勝ち上がると、ラウンド16でアメリカ代表を延長の末に下し、ベスト8へ進出した。

ベスト8ではウルグアイ代表と対戦すると、1-1で迎えた延長後半終了間際にウルグアイ代表FW ルイス・スアレスが手を使ってストップ。スアレスは一発退場となり、ガーナがPKを獲得した。
これを決めればアフリカ勢初となるW杯ベスト4進出となる状況だったが、PKキッカーのギャンのシュートは無情にもクロスバーを叩き失敗。その後のPK戦でガーナは敗れ、ベスト8で敗退していた。
ガーナのテレビ局『TV3ガーナ』のインタビューに応えたギャンは、当時を振り返り、今でもこの記憶が脳裏に焼き付いていると明かした。
「今でも1人になると脳裏に浮かぶよ」
「時々、世界の時間が巻き戻って、あの瞬間をやり直せればと感じることがある。だけど、この記憶は僕の人生で一生背負っていかなければならないことを理解しているよ」
「この過去について、僕にできることは何もない。だから受け入れている。母国を救うためにあの場所に立ったが、悪役になってしまった。このことはもう受け入れたよ。人々がどのように感じるか理解しているからね」
また、この試合の次の日の様子についても振り返り、一晩中泣いたことを明かした。
「あれは悲劇だった、クレイジーだったよ。僕は逆に落ち着いていた。なぜなら、僕は一晩中泣いていて一睡もしなかったからだ。僕はもう泣くことができず、なぜが落ち着いていたんだ」
しかし、ギャンはこの悲劇を経ても前を向いているようだ。一度は代表引退を発表するもすぐに撤回。汚名を返上すべく、心の炎を燃やしているようだ。
「ずっと自分に言い聞かせていたのは、次のチャンスを得ることだった。自分が汚名を返上できると分かっていたからね。必ずしもフットボールを通してではなく、他の何かでもそうすることができると。例えば僕はできなくても、いつか僕の子どもたちがやってくれるだろう」
「人々は僕に引退して欲しいと思っているみたいだが、僕はまだ終わってない」
「ガーナ代表で何も勝ち取っていないことを僕は許せない。だからそれを達成したいよ」
「多くの人が僕を引退させようとしてきたが、いつだって辞める日を決めるのは自分自身だと言い聞かせてきた。誰も僕を引退には追い込めないよ」
