リールMFアンヘル・ゴメスがフランス経由でのイングランド代表入りを語った。
プロキャリアの始まりはアカデミー時代から過ごすマンチェスター・ユナイテッドだったアンヘル・ゴメス。次代を担う生え抜き選手として早くから注目され、16歳だった2017年5月にプレミアリーグに途中出場し、プロデビューした。
だが、以降はポジション争いのなかで伸び悩み、2020年夏の退団までにわずか10試合の出場のみに。2020-21シーズン終了後にユナイテッドから延長オファーがあったが、契約満了を選び、リール行きを決断した。
そんな24歳はリール加入後即レンタルでポルトガルのボアヴィスタに飛んだが、そこで公式戦32試合で6得点6アシストをマーク。翌シーズンからリールに復帰すると、昨季は公式戦45試合で2得点10アシストだった。
リールではユナイテッド時代のように攻撃的MFではなく、セントラルMFにディフェンシブMFとプレーエリアを下げるが、継続的な活躍を披露。そして、この9月にイングランド代表から初めて声がかかっている。

北中米W杯の欧州予選組み合わせ決定! 12カ国+POの4カ国が出場権獲得、来年3月からスタート【2026年北中米W杯欧州予選】
