前回王者としてカタール・ワールドカップ(W杯)に臨んでいるフランス。準々決勝ではイングランド代表との熱戦を2-1で制し、ベスト4進出を決めた。連覇に向けて歩を進めるチームに、自身のSNSを通じてメッセージを送ったベンゼマ。自身はケガのため見守ることしかできないが、熱い言葉で仲間たちを鼓舞した。

「みんな頑張れ。あと少し、あと2試合だ。応援しているよ。さあ行こう」

初のバロンドールに輝き、満を持してW杯に臨むはずだったベンゼマだが、大会直前に左足大腿四頭筋を負傷して無念のリタイアに。ただ、『RMC Sports』によれば、未だに登録リストには名が残っていることから、チームの一員とみなされ、優勝すればメダルを受け取る権利があるという。
