イングランド代表のDFトレント・アレクサンダー=アーノルドが、カタール・ワールドカップ初戦に向けて意気込みを語った。イギリス『ミラー』が伝えている。

21日にカタールW杯初戦となるイラン代表戦が控えるイングランド代表。アレクサンダー=アーノルドの右サイドバックはリース・ジェームズがケガのため召集されておらず、ギリギリでメンバー入りしたカイル・ウォーカーも大事をとってイラン戦は欠場させると、ガレス・サウスゲイト監督から伝えられた。

そのため、アレクサンダー=アーノルドが先発出場する可能性が高いが、今季の同選手は近年よりパフォーマンスの低下が指摘されており、代表入りも危ぶまれる状況だった。

ただ、本人は自分の立場を理解しているようで、大会中は感情を押し殺してチームの優勝のために徹すると宣言した。

「ワールドカップで優勝することが目標だ。個人的な目標は持っていない。全試合に先発出場しようが、途中出場しようが、仮に1分もプレーしなくても、目標はワールドカップ優勝だ。カタールから金メダルのトロフィーを持ち帰ることができれば、それ以上に幸せなことはない」

「個人的に今が最高の状態とは言えないね。だけど多分、最悪でもない。その真ん中ぐらいで、驚くほどでもないし、最悪でもない。もっと良くなる可能性はある」
