1日にロシア・ワールドカップ決勝トーナメント1回戦、スペインはロシアと1-1で引き分け、PK戦の末に敗れた。主将のDFセルヒオ・ラモスは、次チームができる限りのことをしたとして、スペインの国民が誇れるような負け方であったことを強調している。

圧倒的なポゼッションを記録しながらも1-1からスコアを動かすことができず、PK戦で開催国ロシアに敗退に追い込まれたスペイン。S・ラモスは試合後、敗退を嘆きながらも、胸を張れる試合を演じたとの見解も示している。

「辛すぎる。敗退に追いやられることは、とても心が痛い。僕たちはできる限りのことをしたし、これ以上できることはなかった。魂を込め、誇りを示し、すべて出し尽くした」

「僕たちはボールを保持したが、結局試合はくじ引きであるPK戦にもつれ込み、負ける方に回った。でも、スペイン人は誰もが誇らしく感じているはず。このような負け方ならば、自分たちがよりスペイン人だと感じられる」

またこのロシアW杯敗退が、EURO2008、2010年南アフリカW杯、EURO2012を制覇してきたスペインのサイクルの完全終了を意味するかと問われると、こう返した。

「そうではないと願いたい。夢を見続けられるチームがここにはある。グループステージで批判や疑いがあったにもかかわらず、今日の僕たちは名誉を取り戻した。現世代で、残る選手たちも去る選手たちもいるだろう。でも、このチームは誇りを持ち続ける」

仲良しの先輩はバルデ、ファティ、ガビ… バルセロナの16歳ヤマル、史上最年少のスペイン代表選手へ
