すると後半頭から出場した堂安律が豪快な左足シュートを決めて追いつくと、その5分後には田中碧がネットを揺らしてスペインを逆転。その後はスペインの猛攻を凌いで2-1で勝利を収めグループ首位でラウンド16に進んだ。
この快挙は世界中を驚かせた一方で、田中のゴールが大きな注目の的に。ゴールをアシストした三笘薫だが、ゴールラインギリギリでの折り返しの際にボールが外に出ていたと物議を醸すこととなった。

「跳びすぎてる」「ぶっ飛んでるな」上田綺世の衝撃ジャンプを選手目線から捉えた映像が反響「より高さがわかる」
