かつてはリバプールにも在籍したキャロルは、2012年夏に加入したウェストハムで公式戦134試合34ゴール26アシストと活躍したのち、2019年夏に古巣ニューカッスルに移籍。だが、昨季はプレミアリーグ18試合1ゴールと結果を残せず、昨夏に契約解除に至っていた。
その後はしばらくフリーの状態が続いたが、昨年11月半ばにチャンピオンシップ(イングランド2部)のレディングへの移籍が決定。今年1月までの短期契約を結んでいた。
イギリス『デイリー・メール』によると、そんなキャロルに関心を示しているのがバーンリーだ。同クラブでは先日、エースのニュージーランド代表FWクリス・ウッドがニューカッスルに引き抜かれており、その後釜を探している。
キャロルはレディング加入後、リーグ戦7試合に出場。ここ5試合は先発を勝ち取っており、1ゴール1アシストの記録を残している。
