リヨン生まれでアルジェリアとの二重国籍を持つアワールは2020年7月に行われた国際親善試合のウクライナ代表戦で、フランス代表として1試合プレー。しかし、その後はコンディション不良の影響もあってディディエ・デシャン監督に招集されることなく現在に至っている。
フランス代表として公式戦での出場がないことから代表変更が可能なアワールについて、アルジェリアサッカー連盟の会長であるジャヒド・ゼフィゼフ氏は、アワールがアルジェリア代表でのプレーに同意したと主張。
この報道に対し、アワールの側近はまだ合意したわけではなく考慮している段階だとし、アルジェリア代表でのプレーを決断するのにもう少し時間を要するとした。
ただ、フランス『レキップ』は今後数週間で決断が下され、3月の代表戦でアルジェリア代表のユニフォームを身にまとったアワールが見られるのではないかと締めくくっている。
