1日、カタール・ワールドカップ(W杯)グループE最終節でスペインは日本と対戦した。

勝ち点4で首位に立つスペインと、勝ち点3で2位につける日本の対戦。試合は立ち上がりからスペインが支配すると、12分にアルバロ・モラタがヘディングを決めて先制する
先制後は完全に試合を支配したが、日本の粘り強い守りの前に、ゴールを奪えない。すると後半立ち上がりに連続失点。

スペインはその後も前半同様に支配。日本に何度カウンターを仕掛けられそうになった中、最後まで攻めたがゴールを奪えず2-1で敗戦。2位でグループステージを通過することとなった。
パウ・トーレスは試合後に日本戦を振り返り、後半は日本のプレッシャーにやられたと明かした。

「チームは順調にスタートし、準備も万全だった。僕たちは彼らよりも優れていたと思うけど、後半はモチベーションと激しさの点で彼らが上回った」

「この恐怖は僕たちに警戒心を抱かせるものだ」

また、逆転ゴールについても言及。それでも自分たちが上手くいかなかったとした。

「日本は物議を醸すプレーで反撃してきたし、僕たちは攻撃面で十分な力を発揮できなかった」

スペインはラウンド16でグループFを首位通過したモロッコ代表と対戦する。パウ・トーレスは「今度はグループを首位で終えたモロッコのような難しいチームと対戦する。先の対戦相手のことは気にしないし考えない」とコメント。1つずつ勝っていくとした。

21世紀の出場試合数ランキング発表! 首位は1145試合のC・ロナウド、トップ10に日本人選手がランクイン

「本当に泣ける…」スペイン相手に劇的勝利、日本代表選手たちが勝利後のロッカー&バスで歌った曲は?久保建英がスピーカー持ってファンの前に

「激アツ」「どっちも可愛い」長谷川唯の“激レア”スペイン代表ユニフォーム姿が話題! イニエスタにも例えられるボンマティの日本代表ユニも話題「なんかエモい」
