イングランド代表MFカルヴァン・フィリップスのスパイクには特別な想いが込められているようだ。

ユーロ2020のラウンド16で天敵ドイツ代表を破って8強入りを決めたイングランド。その中盤を支える1人がリーズ所属のフィリップスだ。

卓越した身体能力とスタミナ、球際の強さを生かして中盤のフィルターとなり、シンプルなボール捌きで最終ラインと中盤の繋ぎ役もこなす。2020年8月に代表初招集を受けると、今大会ではここまで4試合すべてでスタメン出場を飾っている。

イギリス『デイリー・メール』によると、フィリップスはドイツ戦後に、自身のスパイクを公開。そこには『グラニー・ヴァル』の刺繍が施されているが、それは今年の2月、コロナウイルスのために亡くなったおばあさんの名前だという。

おばあさんはヴァレリー・クロスビーといい、グラニー・ヴァルとしてリーズの多くのファンに知られている。また、クラブの2018-19シーズンを記録したドキュメンタリーにも出演していたとのことだ。

フィリップスは祖母が自身に与えた影響について、『ITV』に次のように語っている。

「天狗にならないで、次のゲームでもいつも通りにって、おばあさんは言っていると思う」

「彼女はいつもラジオで試合を聞いていて、終わったあとに5、6回電話をかけてくるんだ。僕が大丈夫かどうか、どのようにプレイしたか、何か間違えていないかってね」

大好きだったおばあさんへの想いを口にしたフィリップス。躍進を続ける中盤のダイナモは、彼女の力を借りてユーロのタイトル獲得へと突き進む。

北中米W杯の欧州予選組み合わせ決定! 12カ国+POの4カ国が出場権獲得、来年3月からスタート【2026年北中米W杯欧州予選】

フレッチャーの16歳息子2人、世代別代表でスコットランドとイングランドを行ったり来たり…協会どうしが火花
