イングランド代表は、3月31日に行われたカタール・ワールドカップ(W杯)欧州予選グループI第3節でポーランド代表と対戦。センターバックではマグワイアとDFジョン・ストーンズが起用された。

前半に先制に成功したイングランドだったが、58分にはストーンズのボールロストもあり、同点に追いつかれた。

それでも、試合終了間際の85分、MFフィル・フォーデンの左CKをゴールエリア右のストーンズが頭でマイナスに折り返すと、ボックス中央のマグワイアが豪快なハーフボレーをゴールに叩き込み、見事勝利を挙げた。

試合後のインタビューで「僕は彼に『プレーを続けていれば必ず勝てる』と言ったよ」と明かしたマグワイアだったが、ゴールを決めた場面では、チームメイトたちと祝った後、ストーンズのもとに駆け寄り、熱い抱擁で励ました。

もちろんアシストしてくれたことも抱擁の理由の1つではあるが、コンビ愛が伝わるシーンが『ESPN』で公開されると、「私たちのキャプテン」「これこそがリーダーだ」「リスペクトに値する」とマグワイアのリーダーシップ溢れる行動に称賛の声が集まった。

試合後のインタビューでは、「当然僕らもミスをしたくはないが、時には失点の原因になってしまうこともある。僕らは完璧ではないんだ」とも語ったマグワイア。イングランド代表ではキャプテンマークをFWハリー・ケインに譲っているが、マンチェスター・ユナイテッドの主将を務める男の素晴らしい行動だった。

イングランド代表が新ユニフォームを発表、赤ではなくなったアウェイは賛否分かれる「初めてじゃないか?」「そのチョイスはなしだ」

イングランド代表のユニフォームが変? ファンが気づいた異変はベテランキットマンのまさかのミス…「間違ってしまった」

相手が恐れる右手…ストライカーの完成形と呼ばれた男、アラン・シアラー
