アストン・ビラの余剰戦力となっているコウチーニョ。スティーブン・ジェラード前監督時代はそれなりに活躍もしていたが、ウナイ・エメリ監督の就任後はベンチウォーマーとなり、ケガもあって次第にベンチからも外れるようになった。
今シーズンのプレミアリーグ開幕2試合はいずれも途中出場。ただ、第1節のニューカッスル戦は3点ビハインドで敗色濃厚となった87分から、逆に第2節のエバートン戦は3点リードで勝利濃厚となった64分からと、序列を回復したとは言い難い。
また、エバートン戦では投入から20分足らずで負傷交代。イギリス『フットボール・インサイダー』によると、コウチーニョはハムストリングを損傷し、3～4週間の離脱になるという。
以前からカタールとサウジアラビアの複数クラブがコウチーニョ獲得を目指して争奪戦を繰り広げていると伝えられるなか、アストン・ビラも一刻も早いチームトップクラスの高給取りの売却を望んでいるとされ、8月末のケガは痛恨と言える。
