サウサンプトン一筋のイングランド代表MFジェームズ・ウォード=プラウズ(28)だが、来季も残留するとは限らないようだ。

サウサンプトンを象徴する選手であるウォード=プラウズ。8歳で下部組織に入団して以降、20年にわたってサウサンプトン一筋を貫いている。現在はキャプテンも務めるなど、唯一無二の存在であり、サポーターの誇りだ。

昨季のプレミアリーグでは、自身初の2桁得点となる10ゴールをマークしたなか、今季はここまでの全28試合にフル出場し、7ゴール2アシスト。文字通り替えが効かない大黒柱となっているが、チームは現在最下位で、チャンピオンシップ(イングランド2部)降格の危機に瀕している。

イギリス『フットボール・インサイダー』によれば、ニューカッスル、トッテナム、アストン・ビラが今夏のウォード=プラウズ獲得を検討中で、サウサンプトンが降格となった場合は移籍の可能性が高まるという。

一方、ハイバーニアンなどでプレーした評論家のタム・マクマナス氏は、残留か降格かにかかわらず、サウサンプトンを離れるべきであると主張している。

「サウサンプトンは厳しそうだ…降格ならウォード=プラウズは100%去るだろうし、たとえプレミアリーグに残留できても去るべきだと思う。彼のキャリアはピークを迎えている。はっきり言って、サウサンプトンと同等の選手ではない。ビッグ6で挑戦するべき時が来たのだ」

元ユナイテッドSDがFAに復帰…新設のチーフ・フットボール・オフィサーに就任

元マンチェスター・ユナイテッドのスポーツディレクター(SD)、ダン・アシュワース氏が、イングランドサッカー協会(FA)に復帰することになった。 FAは14日、アシュワース氏が新設のチーフ・フットボール・オフィサーに就任すると発表。同職ではイングランド代表の男女チームと緊密に連携していくことになるという。昨年12月にユナイテッドのSDをわずか5カ月で退任したアシュワース氏。それ以前にはブライトン&ホーヴ・アルビオン、ニューカッスルで手腕を発揮しており、国内外のクラブからのオファーも想定されていたが、2018年まで6年間に渡って勤務していたFAに復帰することになった。アシュワース氏は、セント・ジョージズ・パークの再開発を監督し、2028年に開催されるユーロ2028の共催に向け、競技施設とピッチの改善を目指す。さらに、この新役職は、男子フットボールのテクニカルディレクターであるジョン・マクダーモット氏と緊密に連携するとともに、FAの最高経営責任者(CEO)であるマーク・ブリンガム氏とも連携する。また、イングランド国内の地元出身のコーチの育成にも携わる予定だという。 2025.05.15 16:30 Thu
