スイス代表GKヤン・ゾンマーが喜びの心境を露わにした。『UEFA.com』が報じている。

スイスは28日のラウンド16で世界王者のフランス代表と対戦。1-3で最終盤に突入したが、81分と90分に続けてゴールネットを揺らして、延長戦に持ち込むと、決着つかずで迎えたPK戦を5-4で制してみせ、初のベスト8入りを決めた。

勝負を決する運命のPK戦でフランスの5人目となるFWキリアン・ムバッペのシュートコースを完璧に読み、母国の新たな歴史を紡いだゾンマー。試合後、興奮冷めやらぬ様子で振り返り、歓喜に酔いしれた。

「なんて試合だ! 素晴らしい夜になったね。これまで1度もベスト8に到達したことがないなかで、ようやく手にしたラウンド16を突破するチャンスだったんだ。信じられないことが、僕らはハートとキャラクターを持って、戦った。アメージングだよ」

「PKを失敗後、僕らにとって本当に難しい状況だった。でも、チームが立ち直ってくれたのを誇らしく思う。僕らは常に信じていた。試合前から何が起きようが、落ち込もうが、うまくいっていようが、最後まで戦う、絶対に諦めないと言っていたんだ」
