アメリカのドナルド・トランプ大統領の発言が波紋を呼んでいる。
元々、この規約は、2016年に白人警察官による黒人射殺事件が起こった際、これが人種差別的な事件として抗議活動に発展。NFLのコリン・キャパニックが国歌で起立を拒否したことをきっかけに、アメリカ女子代表MFミーガン・ラピノーも同調し、起立しなかったことで制定されていた。
トランプ大統領は、NFLもUSSF同様の動きを見せていることに対し、「(NFLも)同じ方向に向かっているようだが、私は観戦しないだろう」と発言し、さらに話題を呼ぶこととなった。
そのため、スポーツ界との対立の溝は深く、過去にはこの件を問題とし、しきたりであったNFL王者のフィラデルフィア・イーグルスやNBA王者ゴールデンステート・ウォリアーズの大統領への表敬訪問が中止されたこともあった。

トランプ大統領は14日、自身のツイッター(@realDonaldTrump)で、アメリカサッカー連盟(USSF)が国歌演奏時の起立を義務付けないことへの抗議をした共和党議員のニュースを引用しながら、「もうこれ以上(サッカー)は見ない」と発言した。これは、USSFが「Black Lives Matter」として行われている人種差別への抗議活動を支持する上で、「国歌が流れている間は起立しなければいけない」という規約を廃止したことを受けての反応だ。トランプ大統領は、NFLもUSSF同様の動きを見せていることに対し、「(NFLも)同じ方向に向かっているようだが、私は観戦しないだろう」と発言し、さらに話題を呼ぶこととなった。

アメリカ代表FWアルティドールが2017年テニス全米オープン王者のスティーブンスと婚約
