アヤックス出身のファン・デル・ヴィールは、パリ・サンジェルマンやフェネルバフチェ、カリアリでプレーした後、昨年2月にメジャー・リーグ・サッカー(MLS)のトロントに入団。昨シーズンはリーグ戦27試合、CONCACAFチャンピオンズリーグで6試合に出場した。
2年契約であったものの、1年での退団を決意した元オランダ代表DFは、退団の理由を以下のように説明している。
「1年目は浮き沈みはあったけど、楽しさを再発見することができたし新しいシーズンが待ち切れなかった。だけど2年目は来ない。コーチングスタッフたちとのズレが生じたんだ」
