デ・ブライネは11月19日に新型コロナウイルスの検査で陽性判定を受け、公式戦を4試合欠場した。4日のプレミアリーグ第15節のワトフォード戦で復帰すると、14日に行われた第17節のリーズ・ユナイテッド戦では強烈ミドルを含む2ゴール。完全復活をアピールしていた。

オフに入っても「突き抜けてる」と評されたダサセーターで話題をさらったプレーメーカーは、クリスマスには怪物に仮装してドッキリを計画。「グリンチがクリスマスにやってくる」と、その様子を自身のインスタグラムに公開した。

グリンチとはアメリカではサンタクロースと並んで「クリスマスの代名詞」とされている児童向け絵本に登場する怪物。だが、デ・ブライネの仮装はオオカミのような風貌でかなり本格的だ。

標的となったのはおばあさんや子供たち。物陰に潜み機をうかがい、叫び声とともに姿を見せた。さらには、動画に夢中になっている子供にも背後から近づいて一喝。誰しもが飛び上がって驚き、デ・ブライネだと気付くと「やられた」というような笑顔になった。

見事にドッキリは大成功させたデ・ブライネ。プレー同様、一味違うクリスマスメッセージを届けてくれた。
