今シーズンからイスタンブール・バシャクシェヒルでプレーするエジル。しかし、背中のケガなどの影響で今シーズンは欠場が続いていた。
今年に入り復帰。スュペル・リグの直近3試合ではプレーしていたが、突如として引退を決断したという。
トルコ『ファナティック』の記者であるヤクプ・チナール氏によると、エジルはクラブとの契約を早期に解消し、引退を決断したとのこと。3日のチームトレーニングに参加せず、チームメイトに別れの挨拶をしたと伝えている。
トルコ系ドイツ人でもあるエジルは、シャルケやブレーメンでプレー。2010年8月にレアル・マドリーへと移籍すると、2013年9月にはアーセナルへと移籍する。
しかし、2020年以降は急激にパフォーマンスが低下。出番が限られると、2021年1月にフェネルバフチェへ完全移籍。しかし、トルコではさらに苦しい状況が待っており、今シーズンはわずか7試合しかプレーできていなかった。
ドイツ代表としては92試合で23ゴールを記録。2010年の南アフリカ、2014年のブラジル、2018年のドイツとワールドカップ3大会に出場しブラジル大会では見事に優勝を遂げていた。

エジル氏が旧知のエルドアン大統領の後ろ盾でトルコの政界に進出
かつてアーセナルやレアル・マドリーで活躍した元ドイツ代表MFのメスト・エジル氏(36)が、ルーツがあるトルコの政界に進出することになった。『AFP通信』が伝えている。 エジル氏はキャリア終盤にトルコのフェネルバフチェ、イスタンブール・バシャクシェヒルでプレーし、2023年に現役を引退した。 以降は自身のeスポーツチーム『M10』を運営しつつ、最近では肉体改造に取り組んでいることも話題となっていた。 そんななか、元アーセナルMFは23日、旧知のレジェップ・タイイップ・エルドアン大統領が創設した公正発展党(AKP)の議員に選出され、中央決定執行委員会の一員となった。 エジル氏は現役時代からエルドアン大統領と親しい関係にあり、2019年に結婚式を行った際には同大統領が付添人として出席していた。 また、ドイツ代表としてロシア・ワールドカップ(W杯)に参加する直前には、当時エバートンに在籍していたトルコ代表FWジェンク・トスン、マンチェスター・シティのドイツ代表MFイルカイ・ギュンドアンとともにロンドンで面会。 その際に撮られた記念写真が公となったことで、反エルドアン大統領派のドイツ国民やドイツサッカー連盟(DFB)から非難を浴び、この一件が代表引退に大きな影響を与えていた。 2025.02.25 10:10 Tue

リバプールがカバク買取見送りへ…新天地候補にライプツィヒ&レスター

元シャルケのマックス・マイヤーがスイスへ、近年は鳴かず飛ばずの成績が続く
