カタール・ワールドカップ(W杯)の開幕戦が行われるアル・ベイト・スタジアムが完成し、こけら落としとなる試合が行われた。
W杯に向けての工事が行われていたアル・ベイト・スタジアム。ついに施工完了となり、11月30日にW杯のリハーサル大会とされているアラブカップ2021のカタール代表vsバーレーン代表の会場として使用された。
ドーハの北約40kmに位置し、収容人数は6万人。カタール国内ではルサイルスタジアム(8万人収容)に次ぐ、2番目の規模となっている。
遊牧民の使うテントをモチーフにした外観で、目玉の1つはスタジアム内に組み込まれている豪華な5つ星ホテルだろう。ピッチを望む展望席の付いたスイートルームが96部屋あり、W杯期間中は"スカイボックス"と銘打たれて使用されるとのこと。もちろん、大会終了後には通常のホテルとして利用される計画だ。
西アジアで初めて開催されるカタールW杯の開幕戦は、2022年の11月21日に行われる予定だ。

国際サッカー連盟(FIFA)は15日、最新のFIFAランキングを発表。2024年最初のランキング発表となる。
1月はアジアカップとアフリカ・ネーションズカップ(CAN)が開催。その中で、アジアカップを制したカタールが21ランクアップの37位に浮上。CANを優勝したコートジボワールは10ランクアップし、39位に浮上した。
また、アジアカップでベスト8で敗退となった日本代表は1ランク下げて18位となったが、アジアトップはキープしている。その他、CANの準優勝となったナイジェリアは14ランク上げて28位。アジアカップ準優勝のヨルダンは17ランク上げて70位となった。
なお、試合を行なっていないトップ10の国は入れ替えなし。上位では、モロッコが12位に浮上し、アメリカが代わりに13位に転落した。

アジアサッカー連盟(AFC)は31日、2月1日に行われるアジアカップ2019決勝の日本代表vsカタール代表で笛を吹く審判団を発表した。
決勝戦の主審を務めるのは、ウズベキスタン人のラフシャン・イルマトフ氏。AFCの年間最優秀レフェリーに5度選出されるなど、アジアNo.1レフェリーと評価されている。
アジアカップの決勝で笛を吹くのは、今回が2回目。前回は、2011年のカタール大会で、日本とオーストラリアの決勝を担当していた。なお、試合は日本が延長戦の末、李忠成のボレーシュートで勝利し、優勝していた。
その他、日本の試合では、2015年のアジアカップでグループステージのヨルダン代表戦を担当。また、2012年のロンドン・オリンピックの3位決定戦の韓国代表戦を担当していた。
今大会ではラウンド16のサウジアラビア代表戦を担当。日本代表選手からは判定に不満も出ていたが、決勝ではどのようなジャッジを下すのだろうか。
なお、VAR(ビデオ・アシスタント・レフェリー)は、イタリア人のパオロ・ヴァレリ氏が務める。今シーズンはセリエAで8試合、チャンピオンズリーグ予選、ヨーロッパリーグ予選でも笛を吹いている。

9日、ポルトガル代表vsカタール代表の国際親善試合が行われ、3-0でポルトガルが勝利した。
ポルトガルのエスタディオ・アルガルヴェで行われた一戦。ポルトガルは、[4-3-3]のシステムで臨み、マンチェスター・ユナイテッドのポルトガル代表FWクリスティアーノ・ロナウドは左ウイングで先発出場した。
9月に行われたアイルランド代表戦で2ゴールを奪い、ポルトガル代表としてのゴール数を「111」とし、ギネス世界記録を樹立したC・ロナウド。その後ユナイテッドでの試合でもゴールを決め続けるなど、その勢いは止まらない。
この試合も立ち上がりから攻め立て、C・ロナウドを中心に何度もゴールへ迫るなか決められず。それでも迎えた37分、クロスをボックス右から落とすと、最後は相手の処理のもたつきをC・ロナウドが詰めてポルトガルが先制。代表通算112ゴール目を決めた。
先制後も攻撃の手を緩めないポルトガルだったが、この日はなかなかゴールが決まらない。
前半を1-0で折り返すと迎えた48分、右サイドで得たFKからボックス内にクロスが送られると、ダニーロがヘッド。これがGKにセーブされるも、こぼれ球をジョゼ・フォンテが蹴り込み追加点を奪う。
終始ポルトガルが攻め続けた試合は90分にもゴール。ボックス左からラファエル・レオンが鋭いクロスを上げると、アンドレ・シウバがボックス中央でヘディングで合わせ、3-0。ポルトガルが危なげなく勝利を収めた。

カタールサッカー協会(QFA)は21日、カタール・ワールドカップ(W杯)で着用するユニフォームのデザインを発表した。
過去に出場のないまま、ホスト国として初のW杯を迎えることとなったカタール代表。ただ、2019年のAFCアジアカップでは、大会最多優勝回数を誇る日本代表を破って初優勝を成し遂げるなど、力を付けてきている。
サプライヤーのナイキによれば、ホームキットはデザートマルーンを基調とし、袖に白に鋸歯状のトリムを組み合わせてカタールの国旗をイメージしたとのこと。協会のエンブレムとナイキのロゴ(スウッシュ)を前面の中央に配置することで、ホスト国としてのステータスを強調している。
アウェイキットは繊細で力強いパールのオーバーレイグラフィック採用。産地として名高いペルシア湾における真珠採取の歴史を表現し、カタールの美しい海岸線を想起させた。また、動いた際には太陽の下で渦巻く砂嵐のようにも見える設計となっている。
カタールはW杯本大会でグループAに振り分けられ、エクアドル代表、セネガル代表、オランダ代表と同居する。また、23日にカナダ代表と、27日にチリ代表と国際親善試合を行う予定だ。
