24日、2026年北中米ワールドカップ(W杯)オセアニア予選の決勝が行われ、ニュージーランド代表がニューカレドニア代表を相手に0-3で勝利。2010年の南アフリカW杯以来4大会ぶり3度目の出場を決めた。
出場国の枠が広がる今大会。オセアニアはこれまで0.5枠しかなかったが、今大会は1枠が与えられることとなった。
21日に行われた準決勝でフィジー代表を7-0で下したニュージーランドと、タヒチ代表を3-0で下したニューカレドニアの決勝となった。
これまで2度のW杯に出場しているニュージーランドだが、2014年のブラジルW杯はメキシコ代表、2018年のロシアW杯はペルー代表、2022年のカタールW杯はコスタリカ代表にそれぞれ大陸間プレーオフで敗れて出場を逃していた。
オセアニア予選では27戦無敗という圧倒的な強さを誇り、1枠が与えられる今大会では出場は確実視されていたが、ニューカレドニアの堅守に苦しめられ前半はゴールレスで終えることとなった。
そんな中、後半早々にはエースのFWクリス・ウッドが負傷交代。嫌なムードが漂う中で、61分にマイケル・ボクスオールがCKからヘディングで決めて先制に成功。コスタ・バルバルーゼス、イライジャ・ジャストがゴールを重ね、0-3でニューカレドニアを退け、W杯出場を決めた。
なお、オセアニアの国としては初めてストレートインを決めた国となり、今大会では開催国のアメリカ、カナダ、メキシコを除き、日本に続いて2カ国目の出場決定となった。

史上初となるストレートインでワールドカップ(W杯)出場を決めたニュージーランド代表。日本代表に続いて2カ国目の出場国決定となった。
2026年北中米W杯は出場チーム数が拡大したことで、各大陸の出場枠に変化が。ニュージーランドが属するオセアニア地域は、これまで常に大陸間プレーオフでの戦いを求められていた中、今大会は1枠が与えられることとなった。
決勝はニュージーランドとニューカレドニア代表の戦いとなった中、前半はゴールレスに。それでも、後半にニュージーランドが3ゴールを記録し、0-3で勝利を収めて4大会ぶり3度目のW杯出場を決めた。
2010年の南アフリカW杯に出場したニュージーランドだったが、2014年のブラジルW杯はメキシコ代表、2018年のロシアW杯はペルー代表、2022年のカタールW杯はコスタリカ代表にそれぞれ大陸間プレーオフで敗れて出場を逃していた。
2008年に代表デビューを果たし、5度目のW杯出場に挑戦した35歳のDFコスタ・バルバルーゼスは自身のゴールで出場権獲得に貢献。「今回で5回目のW杯出場への挑戦だったが、とても感慨深く、幸せだ」と振り返り、「過去15年間の思い出が蘇ってきた。チームに貢献し、勝利に貢献できて本当に嬉しい」と、自身初となるW杯出場への思いを語った。
また、この試合の先制点を決めた36歳ベテランのDFマイケル・ボクスオールもコメント。「前回大会では悲痛な思いをしたが、W杯が拡大されたことで、自分たちもこの結果になることを期待していた」と、出場国数が増えることで権利が得られる可能性を信じていたとし、「重要なのは、出場することではなく、出場したときに何をするかだ。そのため、準備には15～16カ月かかるだろう」と、本大会までの期間で、しっかりと結果を残すために強化したいと語った。
また、イングランド人指揮官のダレン・ベズリー監督は試合を振り返り、簡単な試合ではなかったと振り返った。
「ボールを多く保持していたが、違ったプレーをしなければならなかった。ハーフタイムにいくつか変更を加え、ランニングやパスをより前向きに考え、試合を安全にしたが、全員が望んでいたほど安全ではなかったかもしれない」
兎にも角にも、4大会ぶりの出場権を獲得したニュージーランド。ここからどのような強化をして本大会に向けて準備をするのか注目が集まる。
