欧州サッカー連盟(UEFA)は13日、2026年北中米ワールドカップ(W杯)欧州予選の組み合わせ抽選会を実施した。
アメリカ、カナダ、メキシコの3カ国が共催する次のW杯。これまでの32カ国から、48カ国に出場国が増加し、規模が大きくなった初の大会となる。
アジア、南米、アフリカではすでにW杯予選がスタートしている中、ヨーロッパはUEFAネーションズリーグ(UNL)が開催されており、ここから本格的に予選がスタートする。
12のグループに分かれて行われる欧州予選。各グループの1位はW杯出場権を獲得。グループ2位の12カ国はプレーオフに進出し、その中から4カ国が出場権を獲得。ヨーロッパからは合計16カ国が出場することとなる。
UNLの準々決勝以降はまだ行われていないため、一部のグループは組み合わせが決まっていない中、確定しているグループもある。
イングランド代表はグループKに入り、5カ国で戦うことに。セルビア代表、アルバニア代表、ラトビア代表、アンドラ代表と同居した。
また、ベルギー代表はグループJに入り、ウェールズ代表、北マケドニア代表、カザフスタン代表、リヒテンシュタイン代表と同居している。
欧州予選は2025年3月から11月までの5回のインターナショナル・マッチウィークで行われることに。4カ国で組まれているグループAからFまでは9月まで予選が行われないこととなる。

データおよびテクノロジーにおけるリーディングカンパニーの「ニールセン・グレースノート」が、オーストラリア&ニュージーランド女子ワールドカップ(W杯)に出場する選手のインフルエンサーとしてのランキングを発表した。
なでしこジャパンも出場する女子W杯。開幕までおよそ1カ月となった中で、各国の出場選手も決定している。
「ニールセン・グレースノート」は出場する選手の中での、インフルエンサーとしてのランキングを発表。フォロワーやフォロワーの増加、エンゲージメント率など、インスタグラム上の投稿ごとの平均ブランド価値を評価してランキングを発表した。
トップ10が発表され、実に9カ国の選手がランクイン。アメリカ女子代表のみが唯一2選手がランクインしている。
1位に輝いたのは、アストン・ビラでプレーするスイス女子代表のアリーシャ・レーマン。世界一セクシーなアスリートとしても知られ、インスタグラムのフォロワーは1340万人。元プロテニスプレーヤーのロジャー・フェデラーを超え、インスタグラムで最も人気のあるスイス人アスリートとなっている。
アストン・ビラでは2シーズンでFA女子スーパーリーグ(FAWSL)で43試合に出場し7ゴール。スイス代表としても38キャップを記録している。
2位には、バルセロナのエースでありスペイン女子代表のエースでもあるMFアレクシア・プテジャス。フォロワーは280万人であり、1位のレーマンがどれほどのフォロワーを抱えているかがわかる。
2シーズン連続でUEFA年間最優秀女子選手、バロンドールを受賞。2021年にはFIFA最優秀女子選手賞を受賞している。
2022年にはスペイン女子初となる代表100キャップに到達。その後、前十字じん帯を損傷し女子ユーロは欠場していた。
3位は、サンディエゴ・ウェーブスに所属するアメリカ女子代表FWアレックス・モーガン。フォロワーは1000万人だが、増加率やエンゲージメント率が低く、価値は3位となった。

元イングランド代表DFのウェイン・ブリッジ氏は、チェルシー時代に自身の元恋人と不倫関係にあった元イングランド代表DFのジョン・テリー氏を未だに許してないのかもしれない。イギリス『サン』が報じている。
ブリッジ氏とテリー氏は、同じ39歳でチェルシーとイングランド代表で共闘してきた親友だった。しかし、2010年1月にブリッジ氏が当時交際し、1人の息子をもうけていたヴァネッサ・プロンセルと、既婚のテリー氏に不倫疑惑が持ち上がり、両者の関係は完全に破綻。

さらに、不倫問題発覚後、初の直接対決となった試合では当時マンチェスター・シティに在籍していたブリッジ氏が、試合前の握手を拒否。さらに、シティのチームメイトだった元アルゼンチン代表FWカルロス・テベスが、得点直後にテリー氏の前に立ちはだかってブリッジ氏を指さすパフォーマンスを見せるなど、大きな話題をさらっていた。
その後、ブリッジ氏は2013年に現在の妻であるイギリス人歌手のフランキーサンド・フォードさんと結婚し、2人の息子を授かっている。
その事件から10年が経った今年に入って両氏は、再びメディアの話題に挙がることに。
『サン』が伝えるところによれば、テリー氏は今年4月にロンドン近郊のサリーに430万ポンド(約6億円)の邸宅を購入し、すでに引っ越しも済ませているという。
そして、その新居から数分の距離にはブリッジ氏と家族が住む550万ポンド(約7億6000万円)の邸宅があった。
しかし、同メディアによると、ブリッジ夫妻はテリー氏の引っ越しが原因かは不明なものの、現在その自宅を売りに出しているという。
この動きに関してある関係者は、「ウェインとジョンは明らかに最高の友人とは言えない。今は不動産市場に不確実性があるが、ウェインとフランキーは新たなスタートを求めている。そして、現在の場所から少し離れた場所に引っ越しをすることを決めた」と、説明している。

しばしば最高のフリーキッカーの1人に数えられる元イングランド代表MFのデイビッド・ベッカム。数多く決めてきた直接FKの中でも最も特別なものとされるのが、2001年10月6日にオールド・トラッフォードで行われた日韓ワールドカップ(W杯) 欧州予選の最終節ギリシャ戦でのものだ。
ベッカムはこの3年前、フランスW杯のラウンド16でアルゼンチン代表と対戦した際、相手MFディエゴ・シメオネ(現アトレティコ・マドリー監督)にファウルを受けると、その報復で蹴りつけてしまい一発退場。数的不利のイングランドはPK戦まで持ち込んだものの敗れ、ベッカムは“戦犯”として扱われた。
国民からの批判を浴びながらも代表に招集され続けたベッカムを擁するイングランドは、欧州予選の最終節を前にドイツ代表とグループ首位を争っていた。2位チームはプレーオフに進むため勝利を目指したギリシャ戦だが、90分を終えて1-2とビハインドの展開になってしまう。
そして迎えた後半アディショナルタイムの93分、イングランドがゴール真正面の位置でFKを獲得すると、ベッカムが美しいフォームからキックを繰り出す。大きく曲がるシュートに相手GKは飛ぶことすらできず、勝ち点1を奪ったイングランドは首位を守りW杯出場を決めた。
イギリス『サン』によると、ベッカムは、このFKによりイングランドサポーターから真に受け入れられたと語っている。

元イングランド代表のポール・ガスコイン氏が近況を明かしている。イギリス『デイリー・メール』が伝えている。
ニューカッスルで現役をスタートさせ、トッテナムやラツィオ、レンジャーズなどでプレーしたガスコイン氏。イングランド代表でも1990年のワールドカップや96年のユーロに出場するなど通算57試合の出場数を誇り、“ガッザ”の愛称で人気を集めていた。
トロフィーこそ掲げられなかったものの、数々の個人賞を獲得し2002年に引退。しかし、その後は酒に溺れ、度々暴力事件などの問題を起こすことに。長年アルコール依存症との戦いを続けている。
そのガスコイン氏が、『High Performance Originals』というポッドキャストに出演し、自身の近況を語っている。
「昔は幸せな酔っ払いだったが、今は違う。悲しい酔っ払いだ。外に飲みに行かず、室内で飲むんだ」
「ポール・ガスコインは誰もが知っているけど、ガッザは誰も知らない。時に僕でさえね。靭帯を痛め、ヒザを痛め、4年間サッカーができなかった。(それがなければイングランド代表として)100キャップは到達しただろう」
「なるべく落ち込まないようにしている。本当に落ち込んだときは、自分を励ますためだけに飲むようにしている」
「監督や選手、ファンを失望させたとは思っていない。失望させたとしたら、それは自分自身だ。でも、プレーを終えた後は、酒を飲むことのほうが多かった」
今なおアルコール依存症に苦しむガスコイン氏だが、その影響からかパブでサッカーを観ることはほとんどしていないようだ。
「嫌な一日にしたければ、(必要なのは)パブに行くことだけだ。いい日にしたいなら、竿を取り出して釣りに行くんだ」
「酒を飲むことではなく、飲んだ後が問題なんだ。酒を飲んだ後に携帯を見ると、30件のメッセージや不在着信があって、問題が起きたと思う。でも、今はもう大丈夫だ。去年は2、3ヶ月間、飲んだり飲まなかったりで、あまりいい年じゃなかった」
そして、今はアルコールの代わりにモカやコーヒーを摂取するようにしているとのこと。モカは1日で15パックも消費するという。
「本当に簡単なことで、なるべく近寄らないようにしているだけなんだ。飲み物を飲むとしたら、飲みたいから飲むだけで、特別な理由があるわけじゃない。酒を飲んでいた頃は、たくさんの人のせいにしていた。『あいつがあんなことをしたからだ』『こんなことになったから』とね」
また、ガスコイン氏は身近な人からも支えられているようで、今はホームレスだが、自身の代理人の家に居候させてもらいながら、講演などをして闘病を続けているようだ。
「数年前の11月に、泣きながらケイティ(代理人)に電話したんだ」
「(講演では)自分自身のことや他の人たちに何をさせたか、刑務所に入ったり、リハビリ施設に入ったり、便座からコカインを取ったりして、そして国の大使になれと言われたときは笑っていいのか泣いていいのかわからなかったというような話をする」
「このような場では、サッカーの話はほとんどしない。私は観客を笑わせなければならないからね。ステージで泣いたことも何度かある。土曜日は、みんなを楽しませることが恋しくなるんだ」
「感情的になることもある。泣くのに時間はかからない。分かち合うべきことでも、人と分かち合うのが怖くなる。そのことを気にはしていないけど、私は大人になれないと思う」
「それでも、私は人々に与えたものを誇りに思っている。10個のチャリティ団体に100万ポンド(約1億9000万円)近くを寄付してきたんだ」
「諦めたことはない。諦めるのは、棺桶に入ったときだと思う。その時を除けば、私は戦い続けるだろう」
