レアル・マドリーに所属するベルギー代表GKティボー・クルトワ(28)は、自身の学業成績の悪さに感謝しているかもしれない。ベルギー『HLN』が、ベルギー代表GKの逸話を紹介している。 現在、レアル・マドリーとベルギー代表で正GKを務めるクルトワは、世界屈指の守護神の1人だ。 クルトワがワールドクラスのGKという名声を得た背景には、元々の才能、たゆまぬ努力に加え、有能な指導者との出会い、運など多くの要素が重なっている。 そして、学業成績の悪さも、そういった要素の中のひとつのようだ。 現在、デュッセルドルフでスポーツ・ディレクターを務めるルッツ・ファンネンシュティール氏は、ドイツ『DAZN』でホッフェンハイムのスカウト部門に勤務していた頃のクルトワに関する逸話を明かした。 現役時代にGKとしてプレーしていたファンネンシュティール氏は、2010年に新たなGK獲得に向けた交渉に携わっていたという。そして、当時獲得を狙っていたのが、いずれもベルギーのヘンクに在籍していたクルトワと、ベルギー代表GKコーエン・カスティールス(27)の2選手だったという。 両選手は年齢も利き足(左)も同じで身長も190cm代後半と共通点が多く、ファンネンシュティール氏は「どちらも素晴らしいゴールキーパーだった。ただ、すべてが似ていて、名前だけが違っていた印象だった」と、当時を振り返る。 それでも、より早熟だったカスティールスはクルトワに先んじてトップチームにも絡み始めていたという。ただ、ホッフェンハイムは同時並行で行っていた交渉においてクルトワサイドの感触が良かったこともあり、現マドリー守護神の獲得に一本化していた。 しかし、クルトワ獲得に向けて思わぬ障害となったのが、当時の同選手の学業成績の悪さだった。とりわけ、数学の成績は悲惨なものだったという。 クルトワの両親が学校の卒業を望んでいた事情もあり、中退してホッフェンハイムに行くという選択肢はなく、ホッフェンハイムとの交渉は打ち切りに。 その後、ヘンクに残留して改めて学業との両立を図ったクルトワは、トップチームでの正GK昇格と共に無事卒業も果たした。 そして、アトレティコ・マドリー、チェルシー、マドリーと順調にステップアップを果たし、現在は世界最高のGKのひとりに成長している。 一方、カスティールスはクルトワとのポジション争いに敗れた翌2011年にホッフェンハイムへ加入。2015年にはヴォルフスブルクに完全移籍し、正GKとして活躍している。 なお、ファンネンシュティール氏は最後に、2010年を境に大きく異なるキャリアを歩んでいるクルトワと、カスティールスについて改めて言及している。 「個人的に両者の間にそこまで大きな差はないと思っている。カスティールスはミスが少ないモダンなゴールキーパーだ」 「もちろん、2人が大きく異なるキャリアを歩んでいることは間違いない。カスティールスに関しては少し内向的な性格なんだ。それが彼にホッフェンハイム行きを選ばせ、クルトワはアトレティコやチェルシーでの挑戦を選んだということだ。ただ、当時はカスティールスが先んじていたと思うよ」 アスリートにとっても学業成績が良いにこしたことはないが、時には成績の悪さが幸運をもたらすこともあるようだ。 2020.06.07 19:00 Sun
