イングランド代表入りのマンチェスター・ユナイテッド新鋭、MFコビー・メイヌーがその舞台裏を明かした。イギリス『デイリー・メール』が報じている。昨年1月にシニアデビューを遂げ、今季を迎えるにあたってのプレシーズンでは主力勢とともにアピールしたメイヌー。残念ながらケガで出遅れたが、復帰後は18歳とは思えぬ落ち着いたプレーぶりで一気にレギュラー格となり、ブレイクを果たしている。
そうした活躍ぶりからイングランドのフル代表入りも期待されたが、惜しくも外れ、U-21カテゴリーのメンバーに。フル代表は次回以降にお預けかに思われたが、19日に追加招集という形で声がかかった。
ついにA代表入りのメイヌーはさっそく合流し、イングランド代表も公式Xに動画をアップ。家族に繰り上がり招集の知らせをしたとき、大盛り上がりだったという18歳の若きホープは心境を明かした。
「ちょっと違うね。U-21代表にコールアップされたとき、(アシスタントコーチの)スティーブ・ホランドからメールがきたんだ。レセプションに来るようにね。そこで僕に声がかかったことと、1週間にわたってこのチームに加わると告げられたんだ。まだ実感が湧いていないけど、楽しみだよ」

イングランド代表が新ユニフォームを発表、赤ではなくなったアウェイは賛否分かれる「初めてじゃないか?」「そのチョイスはなしだ」
