6日にシリア国境に近いトルコ南部で発生した一連の地震では、これまでにトルコ国内で35000人以上が死亡。また、シリアでは最低16000人が死亡し、両国の死者はあわせて50000人以上となっている。
フットボール界ではハタイスポルに在籍しているアツが自宅にいた際に被災。倒壊したビルの瓦礫の下敷きになってしまい、 一時は同選手が救出されたとの報道もあったが、後にクラブやパートナーが否定していた。
そうした中、同選手の代理人であるムラト・ウズンメフメット氏は18日、自身のツイッターに「クリスチャン・アツが発見されたが、残念ながら亡くなった」と投稿。悲しい知らせを伝えた。
ポルトの下部組織出身であるアツは、2011年にトップチームに昇格。頭角を現すと、2013年夏にはチェルシーへと加入した。
