レアル・マドリーのFWエデン・アザール(31)が、ベルギー代表からの引退を発表した。7日にインスタグラムを通じて伝えている。

「今日はページをめくる日だ。みんなの愛情に感謝しているよ」

「比類ないサポートをありがとう。2008年から積み上げてきた全ての楽しい思い出をありがとう」

「今日、僕は代表としてのキャリアに終止符を打つことに決めた。次の世代が控えているからね。とても寂しくなるよ」

2008年11月19日のルクセンブルク戦で、17歳の若さでベルギー代表デビューを果たしたアザール。ワールドカップは2014年から3大会連続、ユーロは2016年と前回大会に出場した。

通算成績は126試合33ゴール36アシスト。そのうち56試合でキャプテンマークを巻いた。

今回のカタールW杯もグループステージ3試合に出場し、主将としてカナダ戦とモロッコ戦で先発したが、チームは1勝1分け1敗という成績で突破ならず。アザール自身も本調子が出せないまま、大会を後にすることになった。
