▽『今日の誕生日は誰だ!』本日、12月31日は元マンチェスター・ユナイテッド指揮官アレックス・ファーガソンだ。

▽ユナイテッドの元監督として知られるファーガソン氏だが、現役時代は母国のスコットランドのクイーンズ・パークFCで始まり、以降1974年に現役を引退するまでスコットランドのクラブのみを渡り歩いた。

▽引退後はすぐに指導者の道を歩むことになる。最初はスコットランドのイーストスターリングシャーで監督を務め、1978年から務めたアバンディーンでは1983-84シーズンにダブルを達成。1985年にはアバディーンの監督を務めながらスコットランド代表のアシスタントコーチも兼任。試合中に当時代表監督を務めていたジョック・ステイン監督が倒れ、ファーガソン氏が監督をすることになった。

▽ファーガソン氏がユナイテッドを率いるのは1986年からのこと。規律を重んじるサッカーを浸透させ89-90シーズンにFAカップを優勝し就任後初タイトルを獲得。さらに92-93シーズンにクラブの26年ぶりとなるリーグ優勝を成し遂げた。

▽ファーガソン監督の伝説はまだまだ続き、1999年にはプレミア、FAカップ、チャンピオンズリーグ(CL)の三冠をイングランドのチームとして初めて達成。以降も11度のリーグ優勝に2度のCL制覇、08-09シーズンのクラブ・ワールドカップ優勝など、ユナイテッドに「39」ものタイトルをもたらした。そして、2012-13シーズン終了を以って勇退。27年間の伝説に幕を閉じた。

▽ファーガソン氏の腕には疑いの余地はないが、若手選手に対する先見の明と育成にも定評があった。当時14歳だったライアン・ギグスの家に毎晩通い、クラブに誘ったというエピソードがある。また、クラブのレジェンドであるデイビッド・ベッカムやポール・スコールズらもファーガソン氏が育てた選手であり、ユナイテッドで一気にスターダムを駆け上がったクリスティアーノ・ロナウド(現レアル・マドリー)にもいち早く目を付けていた。これらの選手からは“父”と呼ばれるほど、サー・アレックス・ファーガソンは監督としてだけでなく一人の人間としても慕われていたようだ。

「高価な食べ物はない」ギネス記録樹立、C・ロナウドのあの肉体の秘訣を専属シェフが明かす
