報道によると、芝の調整の仕方によるものか、スタンドからピッチにカギ十字と思われるマークが見えたとのこと。ハーフタイムにグラウンドキーパーが“再調整”したことで、後半からマークは見えなくなったという。
イタリア『ANSA通信』は、クロアチアサッカー連盟のスポークスマンが、「クロアチアサッカー界だけでなく、クロアチア国民全体にとって恥ずべきことだ。UEFAにも知らせた。イタリアやすべての人たちに謝罪する」と語ったと報じている。
また、『ANSA通信』は、同連盟のダヴォール・シューケル会長が「これは我々の問題だ。解決するために仕事をしている。残念ながら今夜は何かが起きてしまった」と発言したと伝えた。
