2023-24シーズンのヨーロッパリーグ(EL)・グループステージが21日に開幕する。今大会ではリバプールや昨シーズンの準優勝ローマら強豪クラブに加え、日本人6選手が参戦する。
ここでは、注目クラブや日本人選手の所属するクラブを中心にグループステージを展望していきたい。
◆プレミア勢にセリエA勢は順当首位通過なるか
今シーズンのグループステージでは、優勝候補筆頭のリバプールや昨季準優勝のローマ、ブンデスリーガで首位を走るレバークーゼン、アタランタといった強豪クラブが参戦する。
例年熾烈さを増すプレミアリーグのトップ4争いにおいて昨季は序盤、中盤戦の不振が響いてチャンピオンズリーグ(CL)出場権を逃したリバプール。今季はリーグ戦での巻き返しを最優先事項としつつ、前身UEFAカップ時代の2000-01シーズン以来、4度目のEL制覇を目指す。
グループEではDF町田浩樹を擁するユニオン・サン=ジロワーズ、オーストリアの強豪LASK、フランスのトゥールーズと移動面を含め比較的与しやすい相手との対戦となり、積極的にターンオーバーを行いながらでも十分に首位通過が可能と思われる。基本的にはホームゲームで主力クラスを使いつつ、アウェイゲームでは控え選手や能力が高い若手を抜擢しながらの戦いとなるはずだ。
その大本命とは力の差があるものの、カンファレンスリーグ(ECL)初代王者であり、昨季ELファイナリストのローマは今季こそ首位通過を果たしたい。グループGはチェコの強豪スラビア・プラハが対抗となるが、それ以外はシェリフとセルヴェットという格下が相手。昨季はベティスにグループ首位の座を譲ったが、今季はFFPの制限下でチアゴ・ピントGMを中心とするリクルート部門がフリートランスファーやレンタル移籍を軸に効果的な補強を敢行。FWルカク、FWアズムン、MFレナト・サンチェス、MFアワール、MFパレデスと前線と中盤は十分な選手層があり、手薄なディフェンスラインをうまく回せれば、余力を残しての首位通過は十分に可能だ。
昨季は前述のローマに敗れてベスト4敗退となったレバークーゼンだが、シャビ・アロンソ体制2年目の今季はブンデスリーガでバイエルンを抑えて首位に立つなど好調を維持。主力の流出を最小限にとどめた上、MFジャカやMFホフマン、DFグリマルド、FWボニフェイスら実力者を迎え入れることに成功。アゼルバイジャンのカラバフ、モルデとBKヘッケンの北欧勢と移動面や晩秋時期のアウェイゲームという環境面で懸念材料はあるものの、問題なく勝ち抜けるはずだ。
その他では昨季優勝したセビージャ同様に今大会で無類の強さを見せるスペイン勢ではベティスとビジャレアルが参戦。ただ、前者はセンターバックの選手層に問題を抱え、後者は開幕直後にセティエン前監督を解任し、パチェタ新監督を招へいする混乱に見舞われている。
また、数年前はCLの舞台でも躍進を見せていたアタランタやECL2代目王者で今季のプレミアリーグでも好スタートを切ったウェストハムらも突破の本命となりそうだ。
◆三笘らが欧州初参戦
