EFLリーグ1(イングランド3部)のブラックプールは3日、スティーブ・ブルース氏(63)が指揮官に就任すると発表した。
2010-11シーズンにはプレミアリーグに所属していたブラックプール。近年は低迷が続いており、今シーズンもEFLリーグ1開幕から連敗と低調なスタートを切ると、クラブは8月21日にニール・クリッチリー監督を解任して後任探しに着手していた。
そんなブラックプールが指揮官に据えたのがブルース氏。現役時代はマンチェスター・ユナイテッドで300試合以上に出場する名センターバックとして名を馳せ、現役引退後は指導者の道を選んだ。
ブルース氏はこれまでクリスタル・パレス、バーミンガム・シティ、ウィガン・アスレティック、サンダーランド、ハル・シティ、アストン・ビラ、ニューカッスルなどの指揮官を歴任。しかし、徐々に監督としての評価は下り坂となり、特にニューカッスル時代には当時のクラブオーナーだったマイク・アシュリー氏と並びファンから批判の的となっていた。
そのニューカッスルを2021年に解任されると、翌年からウェスト・ブロムウィッチ・アルビオン(WBA)の指揮官に就任したが、こちらも1年持たず2022年10月に解任。その後は現在までフリーの状態が続いていた。

ニューカッスルは8日、2022-23シーズンのホーム用ユニフォームデザインを発表した。
ニューカッスルは今季、スティーブ・ブルース監督のもとでスタートを切ったが、序盤は不振にあえぎ、降格圏に沈んでいた。だが、11月にエディ・ハウ新監督が就任すると、V字回復。ジョエリントンの中盤コンバートなどがはまり、最終的には11位まで順位を押し上げてシーズンを終えた。
来季も今シーズンからマグパイズの新たなサプライヤーとなった『CASTORE(カストレ)』とタッグを組む。カストレは元サッカー選手であるベアホン兄弟によって2015年に立ち上げられたブランドで、マンチェスターに本社を構える。
来季のユニフォームはクラブ130年の歴史を尊重し、象徴的な黒と白のストライプに。伝統的な要素とモダンなタッチを組み合わせた、シンプルながらも洗礼されたデザインに仕上がっている。
胸スポンサーは中国のオンライン・ベッティング会社「FUN88乐天堂」が引き続き務める。
サウジアラビア資本が加わり、今冬にアストン・ビラからレンタルで加わったDFマット・ターゲットを完全移籍で獲得するなど、チームの土台も固まりつつあるニューカッスル。来季に向けてはさらなる期待が持てそうだ。
