メジャーリーグ・サッカー(MLS)の年間王者を決めるMLSカップの決勝が現地時間7日に行われる。
ウェスタン・カンファレンスで2位となり勝ち上がってきたロサンゼルス・ギャラクシー(LAギャラクシー)と、イースタン・カンファレンスで7位に終わるも、勝ち上がり決勝に駒を進めたニューヨーク・レッドブルズ(NYレッドブルズ)の対戦となった。
今シーズンは安定した戦いを続け、日本代表DF吉田麻也がキャプテンを務めるLAギャラクシー。DF山根視来も所属し、夏には元ドイツ代表FWマルコ・ロイスも加入した。
一発勝負で決まる年間王者を決める決勝戦。しかし、LAギャラクシーは大事な試合を前に元バルセロナのFWリキ・プッチが重傷を負い離脱。今シーズンのリーグ戦で17ゴールを決めたエースを欠いた状態での試合となる。
試合を前にMLSの公式サイトは両クラブのコメントを伝える中、キャプテンでもある吉田は10年ぶりの優勝へ意気込みを語った。
「僕たちはこのチャンスを得るために10年間待ち続けていました」
「ファンを誇りに思わせよう。長すぎた。歴史を作るときだ。特にホームでは、これまでとても良い成績を残してきた。ただ、勝つべき試合があと1つある」
LAギャラクシーは現在はインテル・マイアミの共同オーナーを務めるデイビッド・ベッカム氏を獲得し、MLSの新たな時代を切り拓いたクラブ。スティーブン・ジェラード、ロビー・キーン、ランドン・ドノバンなどスター選手が所属した過去もあったが、最後に優勝したのは2014年のこと。あれから10年が経過している。
最多の5度の優勝を誇るLAギャラクシー。6回目の優勝を果たせるのか。対するNYレッドブルずは2度目のファイナルとなり、初優勝を目指す。

アメリカ代表FWヘスス・フェレイラ(FCダラス/22)が同国代表史上初となる2試合連続ハットトリックを達成した。
アメリカは現在、アメリカとカナダの共催で行われているCONCACAFゴールドカップ2023に参戦中。ヘスス・フェレイラは現地時間6月28日に行われたグループステージ第2節のセントクリストファー・ネイビス代表戦(6-0〇)に先発出場し、ハットトリックを達成した。
さらに続く2日の第3節、トリニダード・トバゴ代表戦(6-0〇)にも先発出場。前半だけで再び3得点を挙げ、アメリカ代表史上初の2試合連続ハットトリック達成者となった。
また、ヘスス・フェレイラにとっては代表で通算3度目のハットトリックに。ランドン・ドノバン氏と並び、歴代最多タイの回数となった。なお、女子の歴代最多ハットトリック回数はミア・ハム氏の10回となっている。
新進気鋭のストライカーは、2020年2月1日、コスタリカ代表との国際親善試合で代表デビュー。カタール・ワールドカップ(W杯)のメンバー入りも果たし、これまで代表キャップ21試合で14得点という、驚異的な得点力を見せ付けている。
今大会は若手を中心に編成されたメンバーながらも、ヘスス・フェレイラらの活躍により、得失点差でジャマイカ代表を上回ってグループステージを突破。9日の準々決勝に駒を進めた。
アメリカ『ワシントン・ポスト』は「あまり得点することを考えすぎると、それが頭から離れなくなってしまう。だから、試合では自分ができることに集中して試合を楽しむことだけを考えている」と、ヘスス・フェレイラの言葉を伝える。
昨季はメジャーリーグ・サッカー(MLS)の最優秀若手選手にも選出されたヘスス・フェレイラ。強豪国からもコンスタントにゴールを奪えるようになれば、アメリカ史上最高のストライカーへと呼ばれる日も近いだろう。
