サントス監督退任のポルトガル代表、新指揮官にロベルト・マルティネス氏が就任

ポルトガルサッカー連盟(FPF)は9日、スペイン人指揮官のロベルト・マルティネス氏(49)がポルトガル代表の新監督に就任したことを発表した。契約期間は2026年までとなる。

モロッコ代表に敗れ、カタール・ワールドカップ(W敗)準々決勝敗退に終わったポルトガルは、昨年12月中旬に8年間の指揮で2つのビッグタイトルを母国ポルトガルにもたらしたフェルナンド・サントス監督の退任を発表していた。

後任候補の筆頭にはローマのジョゼ・モウリーニョ監督が挙げられており、クラブとの二足の草鞋を許可する意向とも言われたが、過去に前例がほとんどない未知数な業務のため実現せず。

新たに白羽の矢が立ったのが、ベルギー代表をFIFAランク1位まで引き上げたロベルト・マルティネス氏だった。

スウォンジー・シティ、ウィガン、エバートンとプレミアリーグでの監督経験を経て2016年にベルギー代表監督に就任したマルティネス監督は、世界屈指のタレント力を誇るチームに、後方から丁寧にボールを繋いでいく能動的なスタイルを植え付け、指揮した79試合で56勝13分け10敗と圧巻の戦績を残した。

一時はFIFAランキングで1位に上り詰め、自身初の大舞台となった2018年ロシアW杯ではベルギー史上最高位となる3位に躍進させたが、カタールW敗では黄金世代の加齢によるパフォーマンスの低下、エースでキャプテンを務めるFWエデン・アザールの不振などが影響し、グループステージ敗退。大会終了後にベルギー代表指揮官の座を辞任していた。
