サッカーにおいて、試合を決める大きな要素の一つであるフリーキック(FK)。流れの中ではなく、止まった状態から繰り出されるキックがそのままゴールネットを揺らせば、盛り上がりは一気に最高潮へと達する。この企画『Beautiful Free Kicks』(美しいフリーキック)では、これまでに生まれたFKの数々を紹介していく。
今回は、元イングランド代表MFデイビッド・ベッカム氏がロサンゼルス・ギャラクシー時代に決めたフリーキックだ。
マンチェスター・ユナイテッドやレアル・マドリーでの活躍を経て、世界的なスーパースターとなったベッカム氏。2007年夏には、“サッカー後進国”とされていたアメリカのLAギャラクシーに移籍し、世界中を驚かせた。

3-1とLAギャラクシーリードで迎えた87分、ボックスの外、ゴール正面の位置でLAギャラクシーがFKを得る。キッカーのベッカムは、しっかりと狙いを定めると、直接シュートを放つ。ゴール左上に完璧な軌道を描きながら飛んでいくシュートに、GKも成す術なく、美しいゴールが決まった。
試合は、ダメ押しとなる4点目を挙げたLAギャラクシーがそのまま4-1で勝利した。

ロナウドが日韓W杯での“大五郎カット”を謝罪、奇抜な髪型の裏事情とは?
