1日に行われたロシア・ワールドカップ(W杯)決勝トーナメント1回戦ロシア戦を1−1で分け、PK戦の末に敗退したスペイン代表。イニエスタはその試合の直後、「これが代表での最後の試合だ」と代表を引退することを明らかにしている。
イニエスタはスペイン代表のEURO2008、2010年南アフリカW杯、EURO2012の優勝に貢献。南アフリカW杯の決勝オランダ戦では決勝ゴールを決め、これを機にスペイン国民から英雄として扱われるようになったが、今回の代表引退を受けて、世界中がSNSを通じて敬意を表している。
まずスペインでは、スペインサッカー連盟(RFEF)が声明を発表。「ありがとうと言うほかない。私たちに栄光をもたらし、最も高い位置まで連れていってくれた。模範的なチームメートで、唯一無二で、二度と現れることはない選手。永遠に感謝を」と記している。

イニエスタが19年前のバルセロナデビューを回顧、海外からは「監督になって」の声も

「本当に泣ける…」スペイン相手に劇的勝利、日本代表選手たちが勝利後のロッカー&バスで歌った曲は?久保建英がスピーカー持ってファンの前に
