若くして大きな期待を寄せられていながら、自らの度重なる問題行動によりキャリアを潰してしまった選手が、過去を振り返った。イギリス『BBC』が伝えた。 かつては「ワンダーキッド」と呼ばれ、17歳でニューカッスル・ユナイテッドでプレミアリーグのベンチ入りを果たしたことがある、FWナイル・レンジャー(33)。19歳の時には5年半の新契約をクラブと結び、U-19イングランド代表も経験。週給1万ポンド(約195万円)を手にしていた。 将来大物になることが期待されていたが、その契約から2年半でニューカッスルを追われることに。レンジャーの問題は、ピッチ外に多くあった。 ニューカッスルを去った後のレンジャーは転落の人生を歩む。刑務所には2度入ったことがあり、1度は武装強盗罪。これはプロになる前のこと。ただ、2017年にはオンラインバンキング詐欺で10週間刑務所に入り、左足首に電子タグをつけた状態でサウスエンド・ユナイテッドの選手としてプレーしていた。 レンジャーは若くしてギャンブル依存症になり、クラブの規律違反を何度も起こし、多くのクラブを解雇されることに。ギャンブルにとどまらず、暴行、器物破損、飲酒による問題行動などで何度も起訴されている。 現在はイングランド7部リーグのケタリング・タウンでプレーするレンジャーは、12日にFAカップ4回戦でファーズリー・セルティクと対戦する。 当時を振り返ったレンジャーは、自分に多くの問題があったとした。 「チームメイトや友人、監督たちは『ナイル、君のチャンスは尽きるだろう』と言っていた。僕は耳を貸さなかったんだ。僕は狂っていたね」 「自分に問題があることはわかっている。お行儀良くしていれば、トップの座を維持できたかもしれない。僕はあまりにも乱暴だった」 クリスタル・パレスと10歳で契約したレンジャーは、素行不良により12歳で首に。15歳の時に武装強盗事件に関与し、少年院に11週間収監されていた。 「僕たちは人々を撃ったり刺したりしていたわけではない。手っ取り早く金が欲しかったので『とにかく人々から携帯電話を取り上げよう』と言っていた」 「僕たちの取り巻きの1人がナイフを持っていたけど、使っていなかった。なんで持っていたのか分からないんだ。僕たちは馬鹿みたいに振る舞っていた」 「武装強盗はひどい。僕は彼らを続けたいと思っていなかった。僕はただ、品物を奪って逃げることだけを考えていた」 「大人になった今、人々にトラウマを与えたことは間違いないと思っている。僕は時々狂人だった。他になんと表現すれば良いかわからない」 当時はサウサンプトンのアカデミーに入っていたが、クラブは母親と同居させて更生させようとしていた。ただ、スパイクやトレーニング器具などクラブ内で窃盗行為を繰り返して解雇。その後、スウィンドン・タウンに加入し、2008年7月にニューカッスルへと加入。当時のチームにはアラン・スミスやアンディ・キャロル、ファブリツィオ・コロッチーニら、代表選手もいるチームだった。 そして当時のケビン・キーガン監督に見初められ、2008年8月30日のアーセナル戦でベンチ入り。しかし、すぐに反感を買うことになる。 「僕は何もなかったところから何かを得たんだ」 「でも、彼はこう言ったよ。『いいか、もしまた遅刻したら、金歯を抜いて売らせるぞ!』とね」 「それでも、彼はベンチにまだ僕を呼んでいた。それは別の世界のようだった。少年院から出て間も無く、マイケル・オーウェンの隣で着替えていたんだ」 結局、ニューカッスルでは公式戦62試合で3ゴール4アシスト。プレミアリーグでは26試合に出場した。しかし、SNS上での問題行動や、酒によって騒ぎを起こし、さらにはギャンブルに依存するなど、生活が荒れていく。 「僕はお金に慣れていなかった。他の選手たちと合わせようとしていたけど、合わせようとするうちに中毒になってしまった。結局、トニー・アダムスと同じ状態になってしまった」 「パーティには友達全員をロンドンからニューカッスルに連れて行ったものだ。僕には常識よりもお金があった。僕には規律がなかった。僕は駆け抜けるような人生を送っていた」 ニューカッスルを退団し、すぐに強姦罪で起訴。結果的に無罪となったが、やはり問題行動は続き2度目の刑務所入り。そんな中、現在はサッカーアカデミーを保有し、子どもたちに自身の経験を語り、啓蒙活動を続けている。 「ニューカッスルに移籍した時、僕は心の中で『成功した』と思っていた。振り返ってみると、自分が置かれた状況につながった多くの愚かな決断に気づいた。失敗だったよ」 レンジャーには3歳の息子がいる。それが人生の転機にもなったようだ。今は、フルで 「もしコンディションが良ければ、この年齢ならどのチームでもプレーできる。どのチームでもだ。さびついた自分ではなく、健康な自分である必要がある。でも、錆は落ちつつある」 「僕にはまだ大きな動きが残っていると感じている。もう一度サイコロを振ってみるつもりだ」 2024.10.10 20:25 Thu

北中米W杯の欧州予選組み合わせ決定! 12カ国+POの4カ国が出場権獲得、来年3月からスタート【2026年北中米W杯欧州予選】

「ニールセン・グレースノート」は出場する選手の中での、インフルエンサーとしてのランキングを発表。フォロワーやフォロワーの増加、エンゲージメント率など、インスタグラム上の投稿ごとの平均ブランド価値を評価してランキングを発表した。 トップ10が発表され、実に9カ国の選手がランクイン。アメリカ女子代表のみが唯一2選手がランクインしている。 1位に輝いたのは、アストン・ビラでプレーするスイス女子代表のアリーシャ・レーマン。世界一セクシーなアスリートとしても知られ、インスタグラムのフォロワーは1340万人。元プロテニスプレーヤーのロジャー・フェデラーを超え、インスタグラムで最も人気のあるスイス人アスリートとなっている。 フレッチャーの16歳息子2人、世代別代表でスコットランドとイングランドを行ったり来たり…協会どうしが火花
マンチェスター・ユナイテッドOBの元スコットランド代表MFダレン・フレッチャー氏。その息子2人を巡って水面下で火花が散らされているようだ。 サー・アレックス・ファーガソン監督時代のユナイテッドに欠かせぬ汗かき役だったフレッチャー氏。クラブ通算342試合出場でプレミアリーグ優勝5回、チャンピオンズリーグ(CL)優勝1回、クラブ・ワールドカップ(W杯)優勝1回など数多のタイトルを獲得したレジェンドだ。 スコットランド代表としては通算80キャップを誇る同氏も現役引退から約4年。39歳となった現在は古巣ユナイテッドのテクニカル・ディレクターとして活躍中だ。そして、ジャック・フレッチャー(16)とタイラー・フレッチャー(16)という双子の息子の父親でもある。 ジャックとタイラーは2人とも幼い頃からユナイテッドの宿敵であるマンチェスター・シティの下部組織で成長も、今年8月、2人揃って父が愛し愛されたユナイテッドの門を叩くことに。U-18チームで己に磨きをかけている最中だ。 そんななか、ジャックはU-15イングランド代表として昨年4～5月にかけて3試合に出場し、9月に入ってU-16スコットランド代表入り。しかし、今年に入ってからU-16イングランド代表へと鞍替えし、継続的に招集されるなかで7試合に出場している。 また、タイラーは昨年からU-16スコットランド代表とU-16イングランド代表を行ったり来たり。活動ごとにユニフォームを入れ替えている状況で、今年2月にスコットランドの一員としてイングランド戦に出場も、4月にはイングランドの一員としてU-16日本代表戦に出場した。 マンチェスター生まれの2人はまだ16歳と若く、将来どちらのA代表としてプレーするかを焦って決める必要はない。ただ、イギリス『ミラー』によると、ここ最近のタイラーは再びスコットランドに気持ちが傾いているとのこと。心をイングランドで固めつつあると考えられるジャックと異なり、タイラーはまだ揺れ動く部分が大きいようだ。 その裏では、スコットランドサッカー協会(SFA)とフットボール・アソシエーション(FA/イングランドサッカー協会)がフレッチャー兄弟を巡って火花。A代表入りの可能性が膨らむ数年後を見据え、特大のポテンシャルを奪われないよう、水面下で攻防を続けているとのことだ。 スコットランド代表の元キャプテンを父に持つフレッチャー兄弟。ユナイテッドが宿敵シティからフレッチャー2世の2人を“取り戻す”ために支払った額は125万ポンド(約2億3000万円)で、最後は父自ら息子2人を懸命に説得したと言われている。 2人とも現役時代の父と同じくセントラルハーフ。今はまだプロデビュー前の16歳だが、フレッチャー兄弟を巡る注目度はこれからどんどん高まり、スコットランドとイングランドの綱引きも激化していくことだろう。 2023.10.25 17:09 Wed
