▽2022年にカタールで開催予定のワールドカップ(W杯)で優勝を目指すと掲げたイングランド代表だが、FA(イングランドサッカー協会)の新会長に就任したグレッグ・クラーク氏に一蹴された。イギリス『デイリー・メール』が伝えている。

▽イングランド代表は、2013年に前会長のグレッグ・ダイクの下、2022年のカタールW杯で優勝する目標を掲げていた。

▽それを示すように、FAのトレーニングセンターであるセント・ジョージズ・パークには、カウントダウンの時計があるが、この時計についてクラーク新会長は「愚かだ」と一蹴した。

▽しかし、クラーク新会長はイングランド代表の成功を願ってない訳ではない。

「我々は高い競争力があるイングランド代表にしたい。この大会、トーナメントで勝つために物事を進めていると言うつもりはない」

「1990年のイタリア(W杯)では、準決勝まで勝ち進んだ。本当によくやっていたと思うし、西ドイツ代表にPK戦で敗れたのは不運だった。しかし、誰もがチームを誇りに思っていた。優勝はできなかったが、我々は競い合い、本当に良くプレーした」

「イングランド代表チームに欲しいものは、戦うこと、そして試合に勝つことだ。彼らの才能であれば可能だろう」
