ウェストハムの元イングランド代表MFジャック・ウィルシャーが、衝撃のタックルを見舞った。
新型コロナウイルス(COVID-19)の感染拡大の影響を受け、世界中でサッカーの活動が停止状態に。イギリスでは、5日時点で感染者は4万7000人を超え、死者も5万人に到達する状況となっており、各クラブはトレーニングも行えていない。
それぞれの選手は自宅でトレーニングに励んだり、ビデオで繋いでチームトレーニングを行うなどをしている中、ウィルシャーも例外ではなかった。
ケガとの縁が深いウィルシャーは、今シーズンもケガに悩まされている状況。そ経部を痛め、最後にピッチに立ったのは昨年の10月。今シーズンは公式戦8試合しかプレーしていない。
そんなウィルシャーは、自身のインスタグラム(jackwilshere)に1本の動画を投稿。そこには、サッカーボールで遊ぶウィルシャーと妻のアンドリアーニ・マイケルさんの姿が映し出されている。
ウィルシャーは巧みなボールコントロールを見せアンドリアーニさんをかわしつつ、時折激しいフィジカルコンタクトでボールを奪うなど大人気ない姿を見せていると、動画の最後にまさかの展開が待っていた。
ウィルシャーがボールを蹴りだすと、アンドリアーニさんがそのボールを拾いに。すると、後方からウィルシャーが猛烈なタックルを見舞い、アンドリアーニさんの左足をかっさらう形に。そのままアンドリアーニさんは立上がらないまま動画は終了した。
プレミアリーグの激しいプレーが懐かしかったのか、半年近くピッチに立てていないフラストレーションなのかは分からないが、ウィルシャーのタックルはあまりにも卑劣なもの。実際の試合ならばカードが出ていてもおかしくないプレーは、微笑ましい夫婦のボール遊びを想像してみると衝撃的だった。
ウィルシャーは動画とともに「隔離のフラストレーションは出てきたけど、公平にボールへ行き、勝った。アンドリアーニ、本当に愛している」とコメントを添えていた。

アーセナルアカデミー育ちのエマニュエル=トーマスは、ジャック・ウィルシャーらとアカデミー時代を過ごし、FAユースカップを制覇。ファーストチームでは5試合の出場に終わったが、ブラックプールやドンカスター・ローバーズ、カーディフ・シティ、イプスウィッチ・タウン、ブリストル・シティ、クイーンズ・パーク・レンジャーズなど、イングランドやスコットランドのクラブでプレー。そのほか、タイやインドなどアジアでもプレーした。
現在はスコットランドのグリノック・モートンに所属しているエマニュエル=トーマスだが、今月2日にタイのバンコクから帰国。スタンステッド空港で逮捕されることとなった。
空港では「60万ポンド(約1億1400万円)相当の大麻」が押収。複数のスーツケースの中に麻薬が入っていることが確認され、英国国境警備隊の職員が発見。国家犯罪庁(NCA)によると、スーツケース2つに約60kgの麻薬が詰められていたとされたが、後にスーツケース4つだったと訂正された。
アーセン・ヴェンゲル監督時代には、“傑出した才能”とも評価されたエマニュエル=トーマス。身柄を拘束され、B級薬物の輸入容疑で起訴されていた。
19日には治安判事裁判所に出廷。保釈請求が却下されたが、自身は密輸には関与していないと一貫して容疑を否定していた。
なお、この事件では女性2人も容疑をかけられており、そのうちの1人はエマニュエル=トーマスのパートナー。バンコクからドバイ経由でイギリスに入国した際に逮捕されていた。

ウィルシャー氏はアーセナルアカデミー育ちの生え抜き選手だったが、“ガラスの天才”と称される通り、ケガの連続。2022年夏に30歳で現役を退き、以降は古巣アーセナルのU-18チームの指揮を執り、指導者に転身した。

麻薬の密輸入の容疑で起訴されていた元アーセナルMFジェイ・エマニュエル=トーマス(33)だったが、クラブから即時解雇されていた。
