イルハン・マンスズの名を覚えているだろうか。
今から20年前の2002年に日韓ワールドカップが開催。国中がサッカーに沸いた中、その中でもひと際注目を集めたのが、当時イングランド代表だったデイビッド・ベッカム氏だ。日本では“ベッカム・フィーバー”が巻き起こり、その髪型を模したモヒカンヘアーも流行った。
そして、もう1人“イケメン”として脚光を浴びたのがトルコ代表だったイルハンだ。
「イルハン王子」の愛称で女性を中心にファンを獲得し、テレビや雑誌でも特集がなされた。長髪をなびかせながら頭の上で髪の毛をとめるちょんまげスタイルにクシャっとした笑顔は多くの人のハートを撃ち抜いた。
ピッチの上でも、控えという立場ながら全7試合に出場すると、チーム最多の3得点をマーク。トルコの史上初の3位という結果に大きく貢献している。
そのイルハンは大会後の2004年にヴィッセル神戸へと加入。Jリーグでは負傷の影響もありほとんど出場機会もないまま、最終的には無断帰国という形での退団となったが、その意味でも記憶に残っている人はいるのではないだろうか。
現役引退後にはフィギュアスケーターへの転身も明らかになったイルハン。46歳になったイルハンのSNSを覗くとすっかり“イケオジ”になったようだ。
トルコ代表の公式SNSや現地のメディアなどは22日、「今から20年前、イルハンのゴールで代表が準決勝に進出」と当時を振り返っており、現地では、代表チームを史上初のW杯3位に導いた英雄として認識されているようだ。

欧州サッカー連盟(UEFA)は13日、2026年北中米ワールドカップ(W杯)欧州予選の組み合わせ抽選会を実施した。
アメリカ、カナダ、メキシコの3カ国が共催する次のW杯。これまでの32カ国から、48カ国に出場国が増加し、規模が大きくなった初の大会となる。
アジア、南米、アフリカではすでにW杯予選がスタートしている中、ヨーロッパはUEFAネーションズリーグ(UNL)が開催されており、ここから本格的に予選がスタートする。
12のグループに分かれて行われる欧州予選。各グループの1位はW杯出場権を獲得。グループ2位の12カ国はプレーオフに進出し、その中から4カ国が出場権を獲得。ヨーロッパからは合計16カ国が出場することとなる。
UNLの準々決勝以降はまだ行われていないため、一部のグループは組み合わせが決まっていない中、確定しているグループもある。
イングランド代表はグループKに入り、5カ国で戦うことに。セルビア代表、アルバニア代表、ラトビア代表、アンドラ代表と同居した。
また、ベルギー代表はグループJに入り、ウェールズ代表、北マケドニア代表、カザフスタン代表、リヒテンシュタイン代表と同居している。
欧州予選は2025年3月から11月までの5回のインターナショナル・マッチウィークで行われることに。4カ国で組まれているグループAからFまでは9月まで予選が行われないこととなる。

アンドレア・ピルロ氏は指揮官として選手の喫煙を許可しているという。イギリス『サン』が伝えている。
現役時代にイタリア代表としてドイツ・ワールドカップ(W杯)を制し、ミランではチャンピオンズリーグ(CL)を2度制覇したピルロ氏。ユベントスでもセリエA9連覇時代の礎を築くなど、栄光に満ちた選手キャリアを送った。
しかし、監督キャリアでは失敗続き。予期せぬ古巣ユベントスの指揮官就任が歯車を狂わせた感は拭えないが、選手として導いたセリエA9連覇時代を指揮官の立場で終わらせることとなり、昨シーズンはトルコのファティ・カラギュムリュクへ向かうも1年足らずで退任し、今季はサンプドリアでセリエB開幕9試合を戦い1勝3分け5敗と無惨な成績だ。
そんなピルロ氏がファティ・カラギュムリュクを率いていた昨季、選手として所属した元トルコ代表FWコリン・カジム=リチャーズがイギリス『Filthy Fells』のYouTubeチャンネルに出演。ピルロ氏は選手の喫煙を許可し、自らも選手に隠れることなく堂々と喫煙していたという。
「タバコを吸うイタリア人はたくさんいるだろ? それはトルコでも同じなのさ」
「選手としてはもちろん監督次第なわけだけど、ピルロのもとでは許可されていたよ。ピルロを含めた何人かが試合前にノンストップでタバコを吸い、ピルロはハーフタイムも座って一服。話しながらでも咥えているよ」
「これは文化の違いってやつさ。僕はショックを受けたわけじゃないし、決して批判するつもりもない。むしろ正当なことだと思う」
イタリア人と喫煙と言えばラツィオを率いるマウリツィオ・サッリ監督がヘビースモーカーとして知られ、64歳の現在も1日60本の煙草を吸うと言われている。かつてインテルなどを指揮したアルゼンチン人指揮官のエクトル・クーペル氏も煙草を吸いながらセリエAで指揮したことも有名だが、ピルロ氏もかなりのヘビースモーカーだったようだ。
