カタール・ワールドカップ(W杯)を前に、悲しいニュースが舞い込んできた。
ウルグアイ代表のメンバーに入ったGKセバスティアン・ソサ(36)の母が他界。ディエゴ・アロンソ監督は、17日の午後のトレーニングを中止した。
ウルグアイサッカー連盟(AUF)は声明を発表した。
「ウルグアイ代表のメンバーは、セバスティアン・ソサの母である、イレーネ・シルバさんが無くなったことを深く悲しみ、とても残念に思っています」
「我々はこの難しい時を迎えているセバスティアンにどう国し、彼を取り巻くすべての人々のために力を尽くすことを願います。安らかに」
報道によれば、ソサは即座にウルグアイへと帰国し、母と最後の別れを行うとのこと。AUFのガストン・テアルディ副会長はアメリカ『テレムンド』に対し「衝撃は凄まじかった」とコメント。「我々は彼がモンテビデオに行くことを決定した。専用飛行機を要した」とチャーター機を用意したと明かし、葬儀などが終了次第、そのままカタールに戻ってくることになるという。
ソサはペニャロールやボカ・ジュニアーズ、べレス・サルスフィエルド、パチューカなどウルグアイ、アルゼンチン、メキシコのクラブでプレー。今年ウルグアイ代表に初招集され、36歳という年齢で代表デビュー。そしてW杯のメンバーに選ばれていた。
なお、ウルグアイ代表は19日にカタール入り。UAEのアブダビでトレーニングを行っているが、今回の中止により、トレーニングのスケジュールを変える可能性もあるようだ。
グループHに入っているウルグアイは24日に韓国代表と初戦を戦う。

ウルグアイサッカー協会(AUF)は10日、カタール・ワールドカップ(W杯)に臨む登録メンバー26選手を発表した。
4大会連続14回目の出場となるウルグアイは15年間も続いたオスカル・タバレス体制からディエゴ・アロンソ体制に移行しての今大会。グループステージではポルトガル代表、ガーナ代表、そして韓国代表とのH組に入った。
最後尾から最前線まで重鎮がズラリと呼ばれ、ケガの状態が気がかりだったDFロナルド・アラウホも滑り込み。そのほか、FWダルウェン・ヌニェスや、欧州からの関心もリンクするFWファクンド・トーレスもメンバー入りした。
ウルグアイは24日の韓国戦が初戦。続く28日に今グループ突破の筆頭であるポルトガルとの一戦に臨み、12月2日にガーナとの最終戦を迎える。
