7大会連続7度目のワールドカップ(W杯)出場を懸けて、最終予選のラスト2試合を戦う日本代表。24日には出場を争うオーストラリア代表との大一番を控えている。
そんな中、日本サッカー協会(JFA)の公式SNSが2014年のブラジルW杯出場を決めたオーストラリア戦でのMF本田圭佑のPKに再び焦点を当てている。
当時、アルベルト・ザッケローニ監督のもとで5大会連続のW杯出場を目指した日本は、MF本田圭佑、MF香川真司、FW岡崎慎司ら海外組を主軸に、最終予選で4勝1分けと好発進。早くも予選突破に王手をかけると、ヨルダンとのアウェイゲームに敗れるという波乱もあったものの、オーストラリアとのホームゲームに臨む。
試合終盤の82分に失点を許す厳しい展開となったが、後半アディショナルタイムにPKを獲得。そのキッカーを本田が務めた。
ゴールマウスにはオーストラリアの守護神マーク・シュウォーツァー。緊張感の漂うなか、本田は大きく息を吐いてから助走をスタート。左足のPKをど真ん中に蹴り込むと、埼玉スタジアム2002のスタンドからは轟音のような歓声が鳴り響いた。
試合はこのまま1-1の引き分けとなり、日本は開催国ブラジルを除いて最速でのW杯本大会出場を決めていた。
このタイミングで本田のPKシーンをJFAが公開したところ、多くのファンが反応。「最高でした」、「やっぱこのPKを蹴れるってメンタル強すぎだな」、「この瞬間は一生忘れないと思う」、「何度見ても鳥肌立つ 何度見ても感動する」といったコメントが寄せられており、多くの人の記憶に刻まれているようだ。
日本はこのブラジル大会だけでなく、2018年のロシア大会のアジア最終予選でもオーストラリア戦でW杯出場の切符を手にしている。24日の試合で勝利すればその時点でカタールへの切符を手にすることとなるが、この大一番を制することはできるだろうか

ロサンゼルス・ギャラクシー(LAギャラクシー)のDF吉田麻也が投稿した娘との親子ショットが話題だ。
8月にメジャーリーグ・サッカー(MLS)のLAギャラクシーへと加入した吉田。新天地ではすぐさま定位置を確保すると公式戦12試合に出場して1ゴール・1アシストを記録。キャプテンマークを巻く試合もあった。
ただ、レギュラーシーズン13位に沈んだLAギャラクシーはプレーオフ進出を逃し、早々にシーズンを終えていた。
吉田は7日から8日にかけて自身のSNSを更新。娘と訪れたロサンゼルスのビーチやユニバーサル・スタジオ・ハリウッドでのオフショットを公開している。
中でも話題になっているのがユニバーサル・スタジオ・ハリウッドでの写真。吉田は娘の顔を隠すため、岡崎慎司(シント=トロイデン)と長友佑都(FC東京)の顔をかぶせるように加工している。
岡崎と長友の顔に目が行ってしまう写真には、ファンからも「シリーズ化して欲しい」、「面白すぎる」、「ハマりすぎてて笑っちゃった」とたくさんの反響が寄せられている。

ブリストル・シティに所属する元ウェールズ代表MFアンディ・キング(35)が、今シーズン限りでの現役引退を発表した。
キングはチェルシーユースからレスター・シティの下部組織に移籍。2007年7月にファーストチームに昇格しプロキャリアをスタートさせた。
レスターでプレーを続け、2015-16シーズンには元日本代表FW岡崎慎司らと共に、奇跡のプレミアリーグ優勝を経験。チームを支えたものの、その後はスウォンジー・シティ、ダービー・カウンティ、レンジャーズ、ハダースフィールド・タウンとレンタル移籍を繰り返し、2020年7月にレスターを退団。2021年1月にOHルーヴェンに加入すると、2021年7月に幼少期からファンだったブリストルへと完全移籍していた。
レスターでは公式戦通算379試合に出場し62ゴール24アシストを記録。ブリストルでも公式戦63試合で1ゴール5アシストを記録していた。
今シーズンはチャンピオンシップ(イングランド2部)を戦うチームで出番が減り、公式戦17試合で616分間のプレーに終わっていた。
また、ウェールズ代表としてもプレーし、代表通算50試合2ゴールを記録していた。
レスター時代には2008-09シーズンにリーグ1(イングランド3部)、2013-14シーズンにチャンピオンシップでも優勝しており、同一チームで3つのリーグで優勝した最初で唯一の選手となっている。
キングはクラブを通じてコメントしている。

かつてはレスターでプレアミリーグの奇跡の優勝も果たしたヴァーディは自身のインスタグラムを更新。ファンへの謝罪の言葉を並べた。
「現時点では、何を言えば良いのかさえ分からない。今シーズンの終わり方に対する怒りと悲しみは、どんな言葉でも表現できない。言い訳はできない」
「長年このクラブに所属し、数々の栄光と成功を経験してきた。しかし、今シーズンは惨めなシーズンばかりで、個人的には完全に恥ずべきシーズンだった。辛いし、みんなも同じように感じていると思う」

キャプテンも務めるヴァーディは今シーズンのプレミアリーグで31試合に出場し7ゴール3アシスト。38歳のベテランとなっても、1人で気を吐いて最もゴールを決めており、1年での降格に大きな責任を感じているようだ。
なお、共に優勝を果たした元日本代表FWの岡崎慎司氏が投稿にコメント。「顔を上げて、ここに残ってプレーを続けるべきだ」と、レスターでの現役続行を勧めるエールを送った。
