ニューウェルズ・オールドボーイズに所属する元アルゼンチン代表MFマキシ・ロドリゲス(40)が引退を発表した。
同クラブの下部組織出身のマキシ・ロドリゲスは、2000年から3シーズン過ごした後、2002年夏のエスパニョール移籍で渡欧。その3年後にアトレティコ・マドリーへステップアップし、4年半で公式戦156試合に出場した。
2010年1月にはリバプールへフリー移籍。同シーズンに優勝したリークカップがヨーロッパでの唯一のタイトルとなった。
2012年夏にニューウェルズ復帰を果たすと、リーグ戦27試合に出場し優勝に貢献。しかし、熱狂的なサポーターとの関係悪化もあり退団を余儀なくされ、アルゼンチン国内ではニューウェルズ以外でプレーしないという信念のもと、ウルグアイの名門ペニャロールに活躍の場を移した。
それでも最愛のクラブで引退したいという強い想いから、2019年1月にニューウェルズへ再度復帰を果たし、在籍通算13シーズンで公式戦221試合71ゴール20アシストを記録した。
また、アルゼンチン代表としてのデビューは2003年6月の日本戦。途中出場から初ゴールも決めた。以降、2006年から3大会連続でワールドカップに出場するなど、通算57試合に出場し16ゴールをマーク。なお、2006年大会のラウンド16のメキシコ戦では、延長戦に決勝ゴールとなるスーパーボレーシュートを沈めており、同大会のベストゴールにも選ばれている。
そして、現地時間26日に自身のインスタグラムを更新し引退を発表。ビデオを通じて別れのメッセージを残した。
「考えもしなかった時がついにやってきてしまった。フットボーラーとしてこれ以上期待に応えることができなくなってしまったんだ。プロとしてのキャリアを終える時だ」
「なかなか難しい決断だったよ。でも同時に冷静に考えることもできた。何年ものキャリアを通じて、精一杯の自分を出してきたと思う。もう完全に空っぽだ。これ以上何かを与えることができなくなったんだ」
「色んなことを思い出したよ。特にまだ赤ん坊だった時の頃とかね。祖父がよく僕にボールを蹴らせていたんだ。母は仕事が休みの時は僕をよく外に連れ出してくれた。祖母は家で僕の帰りを待って夕食を用意してくれていた」
「僕にとってみんな本当に大きな心の支えだったんだ」
「あなたがゴールを決めた時、一番最初に思い浮かべるのは誰だい? 僕にとってそれは家族だ。良い時も悪い時も常にサポートしてくれた」
「ファーストリーグでプレーすることは僕の夢だった。ニューウェルズのファーストチームでね」
「でも、いざキャリアをスタートさせると困難の連続だった。妻とともに新たな冒険が始まったんだ。彼女はヨーロッパに挑戦する僕に付いてきてくれた一人だった。落ち込んだ時は常に寄り添ってくれて、僕が挫けないよう、ずっと応援してくれたんだ」

アルゼンチン代表FWリオネル・メッシは、カタール・ワールドカップ(W杯)の優勝を祝して、故郷のアルゼンチン・ロサリオでパーティーを開催したようだ。
カタールW杯で36年ぶり3度目の優勝を果たしたアルゼンチン。メッシにとっては、最後のW杯と位置付けていたため、悲願を見事に達成することとなった。
優勝後には400万人が集まったとされる優勝パレードがブエノスアイレスで行われたが、危険と判断され中止に。その後、メッシは自宅がある故郷のロサリオに戻ったが、自宅前も大勢のファンに占拠される形となっていた。
そのメッシだが、まだパリ・サンジェルマン(PSG)には合流せず。優勝の余韻に浸っている中、地元のロサリオでパーティーを開催した。
メッシは妻のアントネラ・ロクソさんや父のホルヘさん、母のセリアさんとも祝福の記念撮影を実施。また、このパーティーにはアルゼンチン代の仲間も参加した。
フランス代表との決勝戦でゴールを決めたFWアンヘル・ディ・マリア、そしてPSGでは同僚でもあったMFレアンドロ・パレデスもパーティーに参加。イタリア『ガゼッタ・デッロ・スポルト』によれば、ユベントスに追加の休暇をもらい、1月2日に合流することになるという。
また、現役を引退しているが、共に代表で戦ったマキシ・ロドリゲスやハビエル・マスチェラーノも参加したという。
メッシは、年明け早々にPSGへと合流するとのこと。W杯王者としての残りキャリアをどう過ごすのか注目が集まる。

インテル・マイアミに経営参画するフロリダ州の建設会社「マステック」が、リオネル・メッシのためにニューウェルズ・オールドボーイズを買収か。スペイン『Relevo』が報じた。
説明不要の男、リオネル・メッシ。長らく世界最高のフットボーラーとして名を馳せてきたメッシも37歳となっており、選手キャリアは長くて、あと4〜5年か。
そんなメッシを抱えるMLSインテル・マイアミは、スーパースターの「キャリア最後の夢」を円滑に叶えてあげるべく、関係各所と協力し、あるプランを現実に進行中だという。
それは、メッシが少年時代を過ごした古巣、アルゼンチン1部・ニューウェルズを買収するというもの。
メッシはバルセロナ加入前の8歳から13歳までニューウェルズ所属。故郷ロサリオで絶大な人気を誇る名門クラブであり、故ディエゴ・マラドーナさん、ガブリエル・エインセ氏、マキシ・ロドリゲス氏などが所属した。
詰まるところ、13歳で国を離れたメッシは、このニューウェルズで選手キャリアを締めくくるつもりと言われている。
表題の「マステックによるニューウェルズ買収計画」は、スポーツ振興に熱心なアルゼンチンのハビエル・ミレイ大統領も水面下で関与。
アルゼンチン政府はミレイ大統領主導で、プロスポーツクラブへの民間資本の参入要件が大幅緩和される法令を遅かれ早かれ発令する予定。
ミレイ大統領とマステックを“繋げた”という関係筋は『Relevo』に、「インテル・マイアミもマステックのニューウェルズ買収案を承知済みである」と激白した。
ミレイ大統領としては、アルゼンチン東部・ロサリオ近郊における資源エネルギー開拓に向け、同地域一帯での支持を固める狙いもある模様。また、通信インフラ事業も手掛けるマステックそのものを誘致したい考えのようだ。
このように、本件は政局も絡んだ“リアルな”トピックスだが、世界的スターのメッシが中心にいるだけに致し方ないところか。いずれにせよ、本件は決して机上の空論などではなく、現在進行形で進んでいるとのことだ。
