2日、カタール・ワールドカップ(W杯)のグループステージ全日程が終了。決勝トーナメント進出の16チームが出揃った。11月20日から12月2日までの13日間で行われた白熱のグループステージは、3連勝を記録したチームがひとつもない混戦となった。
グループAではホスト国のカタールが大会史上初の3戦全敗での敗退となった中、善戦のエクアドルとの三つ巴の争いを制したオランダとセネガルが順当に突破を決めた。
英語圏の3カ国が同居したグループBは、優勝候補イングランドと今大会屈指の若きスカッドを擁するアメリカが、ウェールズとイランを退けた。
グループCでは公式戦36戦無敗で大会に臨んだ優勝候補アルゼンチンがサウジアラビアとの初戦に敗れる特大のアップセットが起こったが、以降を連勝で飾った南米王者が首位通過、メキシコを僅差で退けたポーランドが2位通過を決めた。

21世紀の出場試合数ランキング発表! 首位は1145試合のC・ロナウド、トップ10に日本人選手がランクイン
