ファーディナンド氏、ロシアW杯の結果に関わらずサウスゲート監督の続投を支持

役時代にマンチェスター・ユナイテッドなどで活躍した元イングランド代表のリオ・ファーディナンド氏が、同代表を率いるガレス・サウスゲート監督のロシア・ワールドカップ後の続投を支持している。イギリスメディア『エクスプレス』が伝えた。

サウスゲート監督は、ロシアW杯欧州予選中の2016年にイングランド代表指揮官に就任。スリー・ライオンズを6大会連続15度目となるW杯出場に導いた。

ファーディナンド氏はFA(イングランドサッカー協会)に対し、「イングランド出身監督が(活躍していくために)適切な道筋を立てるのはFAとしての仕事の一部であるべきだ」と語り、たとえロシアW杯でイングランド代表が不本意な成績に終わったとしても、サウスゲート監督の続投を支持する姿勢を示した。

「イングランドは将来に向けて、タレント性豊かな選手たちを備えている。ただ、チームが発展する時期として、今大会はまだ早いかもしれない。でも心配することはないよ。必ず、進歩していけるはずだ」

「仮に今大会で災難な結果になったとしても、我々はそこから学ぶことができる。敗れた時こそ学ぶことができるものだ。私自身としても、いつも叩かれるたびに自己分析してきた。そこから多くを学んでいくものだね」

サウスゲート監督率いるイングランド代表は、ロシアW杯グループGでチュニジア、パナマ、ベルギーと同居。52年ぶりの優勝へ、18日にチュニジアとの初戦を迎える。

北中米W杯の欧州予選組み合わせ決定! 12カ国+POの4カ国が出場権獲得、来年3月からスタート【2026年北中米W杯欧州予選】
