3日に現役引退を発表した元クロアチア代表FWマリオ・マンジュキッチ(35)だが、最後までキャリアを続ける可能性を模索していたようだ。スペイン『アス』が報じた。母国のマルソニアでプロキャリアをスタートしたマンジュキッチは、NKザグレブ、ディナモ・ザグレブという国内の名門クラブを経て2010年にヴォルフスブルクに加入。そして、2012年にはドイツの盟主バイエルンへステップアップを果たすと、主力ストライカーとして2012-13シーズンのブンデスリーガ、チャンピオンズリーグ(CL)、DFBポカールのシーズントレブルに貢献した。
その後、アトレティコ・マドリーを経て2015年にユベントスに加入すると、本職のセンターフォワードに加え、左ウイングで新境地を開き4度のセリエA優勝などに貢献。その後、アル・ドゥハイル、ミランでのプレーを経て現役引退の運びとなった。
35歳での引退、まだまだプレーできる可能性があった中での決断となったが、最後のプレー場所としてはインドが浮上していたようだ。
インド・スーパーリーグは、11日まで移籍市場が開いている。そして、実際に獲得のオファーも届いていたようだが、高いサラリーがネックとなったようだ。
クラブキャリアを通じては公式戦508試合に出場し、197ゴールを記録。ブンデスリーガ、セリエA、CL、FIFAクラブワールドカップなど、通算22個のトロフィーを獲得。また、2007年11月17日の北マケドニア代表戦でデビューを飾ったクロアチア代表では通算89試合に出場し、ダヴォール・シューケルに次ぐ歴代2位の33ゴールを記録したストライカー。条件を下げてまでのプレーは望まなかったことから、自身を安売りはしたくなかったのだろう。

「ショック」「史上最悪」クロアチア代表のW杯ユニ、伝統の市松模様が不均衡なホームは酷評の嵐…アウェイには好意的意見
