そうそうたるリバプールのGK陣が集結した。
クラブのAXAトレーニングセンターにあるGKトレーニングエリアの壁に描かれたのは歴代のリバプールを支えてきた守護神たちだ。元々は素っ気ないコンクリートだったが、GKコーチのジョン・アフテルベルクからの依頼を受け、地元のアーティスト、ジョン・カルショーがデザイン。2日にお披露目となった。
5度のリーグ優勝を経験し、チャンピオンズカップを3度、UEFAカップを2度制するなど、リバプールの黄金期を支えたレイ・クレメンス氏や628試合出場を誇るブルース・グロベラー氏を筆頭に、イェルジ・デュデク氏、ホセ・マヌエル・レイナ、アリソン・ベッカーら、総勢13名のGKたちが描かれている。2019年UEFAスーパーカップでのPK戦の立役者、アドリアンの姿もある。
アフテルベルクはリバプールでタイトルを獲得したGKを全員リストアップしたという。レジェンドらの壁画を背負うことで、トレーニングへのモチベーションも向上するだろうと考えているようだ。
「すべてのレジェンドGKをそこに置くという考えを私は持っていた。クラブのGKとしてトロフィーを獲得したすべてのキーパーのリストを手に入れ、彼らがプレーしたゲーム数と、獲得したトロフィーの数の統計をそこに載せることにした。クラブの歴史の始まりまでさかのぼり、13人いるとわかった」
「トレーニングに来たすべての者には、ここにいるすべてのトップGKがモチベーションになると思う。彼らが自分でそこ(レジェンドの仲間)に入りたいのなら、一層の研鑽を積まないと」
「これはクラブの歴史と、GKがここで達成したこと、そしてさらに多くのことを達成するための、クラブからのメッセージが語られている」
「若手GKのためだけではない。レイ・クレメンスやブルース・グロベラーのように、クラブで多くのトロフィーを獲得したGKがいる。(現役の選手も)彼らの記録を上回りたいのであれば、より多くのトロフィーを獲得し、毎日より良くなるよう、自分を駆り立てる必要がある」
「それが彼らと若いGKのモチベーションになる。クラブでポジションを確立するためにどれだけ努力できるか、それを示すことだ」

スペイン代表やレアル・マドリーで数々のタイトルを獲得し、晩年のポルトでもリーグ優勝に貢献するなど、世界屈指のGKとして活躍したイケル・カシージャス氏。そのDNAは息子へとしっかり受け継がれているようだ。
カシージャス氏は29日、自身のインスタグラム(ikercasillas)で、次男で4歳のルーカス君がGKに興じる映像を投稿した。映像では、敢えてゴール左に構えたルーカス君が、ゴール右隅へのグラウンダーのシュートに対し、見事な横っ飛びでセーブしている姿があった。
動画自体は数秒のものだが、その見事なセービングの反響は大きく、多くの「いいね」が寄せらている。その中には、元スペイン代表DFのカルレス・プジョール氏の「お父さんより上手いじゃないか」という茶目っ気のあるコメントや、元ポーランド代表GKのイェルジ・デュデク氏が拍手の絵文字を送るなど、カシージャス氏が現役時代にしのぎ削った選手たちからの反応もあった。
カシージャス氏は、スペインのテレビ番組などで活躍していたサラ・カルボネロさんと2016年に結婚。6歳のマルティン君とルーカス君を授かっている。
父親のDNAの片鱗を見せたルーカス君はどのような人生を選ぶだろうか。

現役時代にフェイエノールトやリバプール、レアル・マドリーでプレーした元ポーランド代表GKのイェルジ・デュデク氏がリバプール移籍を振り返った。イギリス『リバプール・エコー』が伝えている。
フェイエノールトで活躍していたデュデク氏は、2001年夏の移籍期間終了直前にリバプールへと移籍。“イスタンブールの奇跡”ではクネクネと体を動かしてPKストップを見せるなど、リバプールのCL制覇にも貢献していた。

しかし、実はリバプール加入時にアーセナル入りの可能性も高かったと告白。当時のアーセナル指揮官アーセン・ヴェンゲル氏とのやり取りを明かした。
「アーセン・ヴェンゲルが私に電話してきて、そして彼は激怒した。彼は怒鳴りそうだった。私はアーセナルではなくリバプールに加入した」
「フェイエノールトで5年過ごした後、私は新たな挑戦への準備ができていた。その夏、ロンドンで数日間過ごし、ヴェンゲルは私にハイバリーと練習場を見せてくれた」
「それは素晴らしい訪問だった。条件に同意し、握手した。私はロッテルダムに戻り、ヴェンゲルは私に電話をかけてきた」
「『本当に済まない。フェイエノールトは1000万ポンドを要求してきて、我々はそれを支払うことはできない、たとえストライカーのためだとしても』とね。取引はなくなり、私は怒っていた」
