昨年、チャンピオンズリーグ(CL)を大いに沸かせたチームがある。それはモルドバのシェリフ・ティラスポリ。クラブ史上初のCL出場を果たしたクラブだ。
グループDに入ったシェリフは、インテル、レアル・マドリー、シャフタール・ドネツクとCL常連の強豪と同居。グループ最下位になるだろうという見方が大方の予想だった。
しかし、シェリフはCLを沸かせる。グループステージの初戦、シェリフにとってのCL初戦は、シャフタール相手に2-0で勝利。すると第2節ではアウェイでのマドリー戦で1-2で勝利する大金星を記録し、大きく沸かせた。
その後、インテルに連敗し、マドリーにも敗れたが、最終節のシャフタール戦は1-1のドロー。グループ3位となると、ヨーロッパリーグ(EL)プレーオフに出場。ブラガと対戦し、2戦合計2-2。PK戦の末に2-3で敗れていた。
そのシェリフを率いたのがユーリ・ヴェルニダブ監督(56)。欧州サッカーを大いに盛り上げたが、シェリフの監督でありながら、今は違う場所で活躍している。それが、祖国のウクライナだ。
なんと、ヴェルニダブ監督はロシアからの軍事侵攻を受けている祖国のウクライナへと戻り、軍隊に入って国を守ろうとしているのだ。
2月24日まではELプレーオフで指揮をしていたが、現在はウクライナの最前線で戦っている。

シェリフ・ティラスポリのユーリ・ヴェルニダブ監督が、大金星を挙げたレアル・マドリー戦を振り返った。スペイン『アス』が伝えた。
シェリフは28日、チャンピオンズリーグ(CL)グループD第2節でマドリーと対戦した。
通算13度、CLでも7度優勝しているマドリーとクラブ史上初のCL出場を果たしたシェリフの一戦。初戦のシャフタール・ドネツク戦でも勝利しているシェリフは、この試合も先行する。
25分、左からのクロスにヤスルベク・ヤフシボエフがヘディングで合わせて先制。堅い守備でマドリーを封じるも、65分にPKを決められて同点に追いつかれる。
敵地でのマドリー戦ということもあり、1-1のドローでも大きな勝ち点となるシェリフに対し、マドリーは勝利を求めて必死に戦う。しかし90分、シェリフはセバスティアン・ティルの強烈なミドルシュートが炸裂。土壇場で勝ち越し、そのまま1-2で勝利した。
グループで唯一の2連勝、首位に立つこととなったシェリフのヴェルニダブ監督は、大金星後の率直な感想を語った。
「マドリーとこのような試合の後、私は幸せだと言いたい。感情に溢れており、今日の全てのことに対して選手たちにとても感謝している」
「彼らはチームとして戦った。みんなが我々を批判していた。でも、我々は値すると思う」
「守備がしっかりしていることはよく理解していた。守備も良かったし、カウンターも上手くいった」
「最後にこのような重要なゴールを決めることができた。嬉しい。チームと選手たちをとても誇りに思う。我々はこれからも続けていきたい」
グループステージを戦う上で大きなアドバンテージを得たシェリフ。次のラウンドに進む期待も高まる中、ヴェルニダブ監督は出場に値しないと言われたことを引き合いに出し、まだまだそこは考えないとした。
「シェリフはチャンピオンズリーグに参加するに値しないと言った人も居たし、特に重要な選手もいた」
「次のラウンドのことは考えていない。なぜなら、何も特別なことはしていないからだ。一歩一歩前に進んでいく」
「その後で見てみよう。とても重要な試合が4つ残っている。我々が最後の試合をするとき、我々は目の当たりにするだろう」
