イングランド5部のナショナルリーグに所属するレクサムが、見事にリーグ制覇。4部昇格を果たした。
22日、ナショナルリーグ第45節が行われ、レクサムはホームにボアハム・ウッドを迎えた。
2位のノッツ・カウンティ(勝ち点103)と勝ち点差4で臨んだ試合。勝てば最終節を残しての優勝が決まる状況だった。
しかし、試合は開始1分で失点する展開に。それでも15分にエリオット・リーのゴールで同点とすると、後半にはポール・マリンが2ゴールを記録し、3-1で勝利。勝ち点を110にして、優勝とともにリーグ2(イングランド4部)への昇格が決まった。
15年ぶりの4部昇格となったレクサムだが、話題となる理由はオーナーにあり。ハリウッドスターのライアン・レイノルズ氏。カナダ出身の俳優で、『ブレイド3』や『デッドプール』などにも出演。妻は『ゴシップガール』のセリーナ・ヴァンダーウッドセン役でブレイクした女優のブレイク・ライヴリーさんであることも有名だ。
レイノルズ氏と共にクラブを保有するのは俳優のロブ・マケルへニー氏。2020年11月に買収すると、チームは2年で結果を残すこととなった。シーズン途中には元イングランド代表GKベン・フォスターを獲得し、大きく後援している。
ハリウッド俳優でありながら、レクサムのファンともパブやスタンドで交流をするなど、注目を集めていたレイノルズし。試合後、イギリス『BTスポーツ』で喜びを語った。
「何が起きたか、理解できない。まだちょっと、言葉が出ない」
「私の頭の中を駆け巡っているのは、人々が最初に『なぜレクサムなのか?』と言ったことだ」
「ただ、これがまさにレクサムだった理由だ。今起こっていることが全てだ」
マケルヘニー氏も『BTスポーツ』で優勝と昇格を喜んでいる。
「レクサムにとってそれが何を意味するかを聞くことができる。それが我々にとって最も重要なことだ」
「これは彼らと祝賀のカタルシスの瞬間であり、我々が彼らのコミュニティに歓迎されることは私の人生の名誉でもあった」
