マンチェスター・シティのスペイン代表MFロドリのシーズンMVP候補漏れが物議を醸す中、2度の同賞受賞者がその批判に同調する趣旨の発言を行った。イギリス『Sport Bible』が伝えている。
プレミアリーグは9日、2023-24シーズンの最優秀選手賞であるプレーヤー・オブ・ザ・シーズンのノミネート選手8名を発表した。
今週末の最終節を前にアーセナルとマンチェスター・シティの2強による優勝争いが続く中、今回の発表ではシティからノルウェー代表FWアーリング・ハーランド、イングランド代表MFフィル・フォーデンの2名、アーセナルからノルウェー代表MFマルティン・ウーデゴール、イングランド代表MFデクラン・ライスの2名、その他ではリバプールのオランダ代表DFヴィルヒル・ファン・ダイク、チェルシーのイングランド代表MFコール・パーマー、アストン・ビラのイングランド代表FWオリー・ワトキンス、ニューカッスルのスウェーデン代表FWアレクサンダー・イサクがノミネートされた。
そういった中、物議を醸したのが、首位シティの心臓として出場試合無敗を継続し、攻守両面でハイレベルのパフォーマンスを見せてきたスペイン代表MFの選外だ。
シティの守護神を務めるエデルソンは先日にブラジル『ESPN』で「なぜロドリがリストに載っていないのか理解できない。正直言って、それは馬鹿げている」と憤りを示していた。
そのエデルソンとはややニュアンスが異なるものの、同じくロドリの選外に異を唱える形となったのが、ベルギー代表MFケビン・デ・ブライネだ。
デ・ブライネは誰が2023-24シーズンの最優秀選手賞に相応しいかと質問を受けた際、「僕らのチームを見ると、プレーヤー・オブ・ザ・シーズンにはフィル・フォーデンかロドリのどちらかだと思う。それは彼らの重要性からくる」と、ロドリが今季シティのベストプレーヤーとの見解を示した。
また、自チーム以外では「他のチームにも本当に優れたプレーヤーが何人かいる。アーセナルにも何人かいたけど、オリー・ワトキンスはアストン・ビラで素晴らしかった」と、今季36試合19ゴール13アシストを記録してアストン・ビラのチャンピオンズリーグ出場権獲得に貢献したストライカーを名指しで称賛している。

マンチェスター・シティは16日、ブラジル代表GKエデルソンの負傷を発表。今シーズンが終了したことを報告した。
エデルソンは、14日にプレミアリーグ第34節延期分でトッテナム戦に先発出場。チームは0-2で勝利し、最終節を前に首位に浮上した中、エデルソンは69分にトッテナムのアルゼンチン代表DFクリスティアン・ロメロと激突。その後にシュテファン・オルテガと交代していた。
交代時には大いに不満を露わにしていたが、ジョゼップ・グアルディオラ監督は顔面を打っていたことを心配して交代させていた。
プレミアリーグの最終節、そしてマンチェスター・ユナイテッドとのFAカップ決勝の2試合が控えているシティ。しかし、エデルソン派遣画の結果、右眼窩にわずかな骨折が見つかったという。
これにより、エデルソンの今シーズンは終了。今シーズンはプレミアリーグで33試合、チャンピオンズリーグ(CL)で7試合に出場するなど、43試合に出場していた。

マンチェスター・シティは16日、2024-25シーズンのホームキットを発表した。
2022-23シーズンまでプレミアリーグ3連覇を達成しているシティ。2023-24シーズンはアーセナル、リバプールとの熾烈な優勝争いを繰り広げてきた中、最終節を前についに首位に立ち、残り1節を迎える。
前人未到の4連覇を目指すシティは、最終節を前に新ユニフォームを発表した。
新ユニフォームには、マンチェスター市民であればお馴染みの「0161」からインスピレーションを得たデザインに。「0161」はマンチェスターの市外局番であり、都市の象徴としても認知され、街頭やTシャツのデザインが取り入れられている。
ホームユニフォームはクラブカラーのスカイブルーのシンプルなデザインだが、襟首や袖口には「0161」を柄として施している。
ファンは「素晴らしい!」、「選手が輝いて見える」、「これは良い」、「これは欲しい」、「群を抜いて好き」とコメントしている。

マンチェスター・シティがプレミアリーグ最終節を前にして首位に躍り出た。
首位アーセナルを1ポイント差で追いかける2位シティ。14日に延期分の第34節でトッテナムのホームに乗り込み、アーリング・ハーランドの2発で2-0の白星を掴み、8連勝を達成した。
シティはこれでアーセナルを2ポイント差をつけ、首位奪取に成功。19日にホームで行われる最終節のウェストハム戦を勝てば、前人未到のプレミア4連覇が決まる。
古巣トッテナム戦でも右サイドバックとしてフル出場のイングランド代表DFカイル・ウォーカーはイギリス『スカイ・スポーツ』で優勝まであと1勝に迫った今の心境とともに試合を振り返りつつ、決意を新たにした。

トッテナムのアンジェ・ポステコグルー監督が、マンチェスター・シティ戦の敗戦を振り返り、チームを取り巻く状況に苦言を呈した。イギリス『BBC』が伝えた。
14日、プレミアリーグ第34節の延期分でトッテナムはシティをホームに迎えた。
4位でのフィニッシュを目指すトッテナムは勝利が必要な一戦。一方で、相手のシティはプレミアリーグ4連覇に向けて勝利したい一戦。共に勝利が必要な状況で迎えたビッグマッチは、前半こそゴールレスだったが、アーリング・ハーランドの2ゴールでシティが勝利し、アーセナルを抜いて首位に立った。
一方のトッテナムは4位フィニッシュが消滅。来シーズンのチャンピオンズリーグ(CL)出場権を逃したが、チームの基盤が脆いと語った。
「基盤が本当に脆弱だ。この48時間でそれが分かった。クラブの中でも外でもだ。どこでもだ。興味深いトレーニングだった。これは私の見方にすぎない」
ただ、試合に向けての準備段階で、ポステコグルー監督は違和感があったという。
トッテナムが勝利した場合、同じノースロンドンの最大のライバルであるアーセナルに20年ぶりのプレミアリーグ優勝のチャンスを与えてしまうことになる。
トッテナムのファンの中には、アーセナルのチャンスを潰すことができるため、シティに負けることを喜ぶ人もいた。目的は自分たちに向いていない不思議な状況は受け入れながらも、疑問を持っているようだ。
「もちろん影響はあるだろう。それが現状だ。人々の行動を私が指図はできない」
「彼らは好きなように自分を表現することを許されている。でも、試合で終盤に勝者がいるのは、観客が我々を助けてくれたからだ」
また、試合中にスタンドのスパーズのファンと口論するポステコグルー監督の様子がSNSで出回り、先制された直後にはシティを祝福する“ポズナン(肩を組んで飛び跳ねて祝うダンス)”をする2人のトッテナムファンの姿も出回っている。
ポステコグルー監督は、ファンの行動は気にしないと言及。自分たちが強くなるため、勝つためにやっているだけだと厳しい言葉を並べた。
「私はこのフットボールクラブで成功したい。それが私がここに連れてこられた理由だ。だから、他の人たちが何をしたいのか、彼らがどのように感じたいのか、そして彼らの優先事項がなんなのか、私には全く興味がない」
「勝てるチームを作るために何が重要なのかは分かっている。それが、私が集中するべきことだ」
